  16. Doncaster council accused of disability transport failingspublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

It's claimed that Doncaster Council has not implemented new restrictions which protect disabled taxi passengers from further discrimination.

    Taxis

Only a quarter of councils across Yorkshire have created so-called Section 167 lists, which are needed to hold taxi drivers to account if they discriminate against disabled passengers.

A change in the Equality Act in April last year means taxi drivers could face a fine of up to £1,000 if they refuse to transport wheelchair users or attempt to charge them extra.

But the rules only apply to vehicles listed on Section 167 lists, which councils need to create.

Councils, including Doncaster, Rotherham, York, Wakefield and Scarborough haven't done so despite a government-recommended deadline of October 2017.

Nearby councils of Sheffield and Barnsley have completed all the necessary paper work.

Doncaster Council, external didn't say why they hadn't implemented the new restrictions but added all their Hackney Carriage vehicles are wheelchair accessible.

Muscular Dystrophy UK along with disability campaigner Doug Paulley said the research 'lays bare the complex problems around the law change', with many councils 'confused as to their obligations and the being public unsure of their rights'.

The pair are calling for the Department for Transport to make the lists mandatory, arguing that the current system has proven 'unworkable'.

  18. Council apologises after vote refusalpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

In Bradford, the council has apologised after a voter was turned away by an official for not bringing photo identification to the polling station.

None was necessary and Bradford is not one of the five areas trialling voters bringing ID.

Dr Chrys Harris did not have her polling card or photo ID, and clerks would not let her vote.

After polling station staff called their superiors, she was allowed to vote.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We apologise to the very small number of voters concerned who were asked to provide ID to vote in one Shipley polling station today."

The problem was dealt with as soon as officials were alerted, the council said.

"To confirm, there is no requirement for voters to provide ID to cast a vote and a further message has been issued to all polling staff," the spokesman added.
