  2. York teacher fired over horror film wins £646k payoutpublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

    A teacher from York who was sacked for showing a horror film Halloween to a class of 15-year-old pupils has won a £646,000 payout.

    Philip Grosset, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, was fired from the Joseph Rowntree School, in York, in 2014 on the grounds of gross misconduct.

    But an employment tribunal ruled he was a victim of disability discrimination. Mr Grosset argued his judgement had been affected by stress, contributed by condition.

    Although the school rejected this and said it was concerned he had not shown remorse, the tribunal ruled he would have been unlikely to have shown the film if his workload had been adjusted.

    City of York Council has been ordered to pay the damages after its appeal against the decision failed.

    The Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banking Group (CYBG) has reported half-year losses of £95m, after taking a hit over the mis-selling of payment protection insurance (PPI).

    Shares in CYBG were down by more than 5% at lunchtime.

    The banking group, which has bases in Leeds and Glasgow, has so far set aside almost £2.5bn for PPI claims.

    Underlying pre-tax profits for the period were up by 28% to £158m, which the company said was down to its customer growth strategy and a reduced cost base.

    The group cautioned it expected trading conditions to "remain challenging", with slowing consumer spending and borrowing and a competitive mortgage market.

    Plane spotters turned a cemetery in Leeds into a "mini-festival", a bereaved mum has said.

    A large crowd gathered at Yeadon cemetary, next to Leeds Bradford Airport, to watch the arrival of a Canadian C17 aircraft.

    The woman said she found people on picnic blankets, as well as children playing football and riding bicycles.

    Councillor Colin Campbell who represents the ward where the airport is situated said people should be "more considerate".

    Photographs of people are being displayed alongside paintings of the same individual in a new exhibition at a Sheffield gallery.

    Persistence Works Gallery's , externalexhibition teamed portrait painter Andrew Hunt and portrait photographer Chris Saunders together.

    The project began last summer, when Andy and Chris occupied one of the stalls at Sheffield's Moor Market for a day.

    Chris took 50 photographs to record people who were working and shopping there.

    A murder investigation has been launched after a woman from West Yorkshire was found dead in a house in Middlesbrough.

    Jessica Patel, 34, from the Leeds area, was discovered at an address in The Avenue in Linthorpe at 20:20 on Monday.

    Cleveland Police said she had suffered "serious injuries" prior to death.

    Work to stabilise the cliffs behind Scarborough Spa will begin at the end of May, the council has confirmed.

    The scheme, costing £13.4m, will see steel piles used to reinforce the cliff face, external, to prevent further landslides.

    More than 20,000 people visited the Leeds International Festival, external, according to the team behind the event.

    The festival, which was held for the first time last year, came to a close this weekend and the city's buildings were bathed in pink as part of the celebrations.

    The programme of events over 15 days combined international and local artists.

    The festival's due to return again in 2019.
