    Bin collectors in Kirklees have announced they will take strike action over claims of "bullying" and having leave denied.

    It's certainly not the first area to have lost its refuse collections over a dispute, so what's the impact on the people that live there?

    • It caused a backlog of rubbish in some areas
    • it was described at the time as "very unpleasant", but not a public health risk.

    Of course, the bin strike could yet be called off, as happened in Doncaster last summer.

    The Dean of York is to become the new Bishop of Bristol, the first woman to take on the role in the city.

    The Very Reverend Vivienne Faull will become the 57th Bishop of Bristol after being appointed by The Queen.

    It brings the number of female bishops in the Church of England to 15.

    She's spoken of her sadness to be leaving York and has paid tribute to the volunteers, worshipers and staff at the Minster.

    Her consecration ceremony will take place at St Paul's Cathedral on July the 3rd.

    The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, says the process of finding her successor in York is underway.

  3. MP warns of 'mental health crisis' in schoolspublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 15 May 2018

    The government must do more to help schools cope with the mental health pressures faced by pupils and staff, a Labour MP has said.

    John Healey, the MP for Wentworth and Dearne, made the call after receiving a letter from a local student about stress levels ahead of exams.

    Mr Healey said it wasn't just students who were struggling, but teachers were also facing pressures from increasing workloads.

    A government spokeswoman said they had pledged £1.7 billion to young people's mental health and wellbeing to provide more support for pupils.

    The East Coast rail franchise could be scrapped this week, it's being claimed.

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling is due to announce who will operate trains on the line after Virgin Trains East Coast reported a loss from the route.

    The Financial Times reported that a decision "is expected before the end of the week", after the deal - which was supposed to last until 2023 - was cut short.

    Mr Grayling previously said he will either put the franchise into public control through an operator of last resort or negotiate a short-term deal with the incumbent.

    People around Leeds have been sharing pictures on social media after an RAF C-17 flew very low over the city this morning.

    It's part of a military training week which Leeds Bradford Airport is staging.

    The huge cargo plane had come from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

    A £20,000 scheme to clean-up a litter blackspot in the Dearne Valley is expected to start work later this month, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The disused railway land off Straight Lane has been blighted by problems including fly-tipping.

    The Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership, external intends to create a new outdoor destination for residents in a disadvantaged community.

    The scheme includes an orchard and wildflower area and improved access to the site.

  9. Man charged over Rotherham stabbingpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 15 May 2018

    A man has been charged in connection with a stabbing in Rotherham last week.

    A 36-year-old man was wounded in the neck in the incident in Eastwood at about 9:40 on 9 May.

    He has since been released from hospital after treatment.

    Nicholas Boyle, of St Leonards Lane, Eastwood, 44, has been charged with a section 18 assault, police say.

    He's been remanded in custody to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on Friday 8 June.

    People across Leeds have been posting pictures of a low flying military plane as it flew into Leeds Bradford Airport this morning.

    The airport promised last week that a lot of non-commercial flights would be touching down

    At the weekend, a huge Canadian C-17 Globemaster landed.

    Leeds Bradford Airport has now confirmed that an RAF C-17 from RAF Brize Norton arrived this morning as part of a military training week.

    Dates for strike action have been announced by bin collectors in West Yorkshire.

    Unison says Kirklees Council's 70 waste staff are owed a total of 23 years' leave and claim staff have been "bullied" by managers.

    Their members will now strike between 4 and 10 June after allegations that workers with personal emergencies have even had requests for a half day off denied.

    Kirklees Council has been contacted for comment.

    Taxi drivers are to be encouraged to switch to electric vehicles to try and reduce air pollution in Sheffield, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Sheffield is one of 28 councils across the country which have been told by the government to tackle poor air quality.

    The local authority has been given £1.2 million to cut nitrogen dioxide levels in the shortest possible time.

    Encouraging cab drivers to switch vehicles is one of a number of ideas to cut pollution.

    Other ideas include increasing the number of charging points for electric vehicles and altering traffic light sequences to reduce the amount of standing traffic.

    Officers have released the e-fit picture after a house was broken into on Lynthorne Road earlier this month.

    The burglar smashed a window and the left with the owner's gadgets, but threw them away as they ran off.

    An 80-year-old woman who was hurt in a car crash near Skipton yesterday remains in a stable condition in hospital.

    The woman, who is from Cheshire, was driving a Renault Clio which collided with a silver Nissan Qashqai as she was pulling out of a lay-by on the A629 Skipton bypass.

    Her passenger, an 80-year-old man, was left with minor injuries.

    The driver and passenger of the Nissan, who are both aged 31 and from Halifax, were also left with minor injuries.
