Kirklees bin strike: How other areas copedpublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 15 May 2018
Bin collectors in Kirklees have announced they will take strike action over claims of "bullying" and having leave denied.
It's certainly not the first area to have lost its refuse collections over a dispute, so what's the impact on the people that live there?
Leeds
- Back in 2009 bin collectors and street cleaners went on an 11-week strike
- People had to stockpile their rubbish as the dispute went on
- There were reports of an increase in vermin.
Birmingham
- Last year Birmingham's bin strike went on for three months
- The dispute led to thousands of tonnes of rubbish left piled up on the city's streets.
Brighton and Hove
- The area down south saw a string of strikes between 2013 and 2014
- It caused a backlog of rubbish in some areas
- it was described at the time as "very unpleasant", but not a public health risk.
Of course, the bin strike could yet be called off, as happened in Doncaster last summer.
Kirklees has been contacted for comment.
