Staff backed the walkout amid rising anger over a two-year pay offer, which would see drivers and conductors get a 26p-an-hour pay rise in each year.

Over 200 drivers and conductors took part in Unite's industrial action ballot, which saw 91.7 % back strike action with a turnout of over 83%.

Unite representatives will meet Stagecoach bosses next month.

    Quote Message

With inflation eating into wages, the current pay offer falls short of the aspirations of our members who work hard to keep Sheffield on the move. Bosses should be under no illusion: industrial action is a last resort, but our members are prepared to take it to achieve a fair pay rise."

Planners at a meeting of the North York Moors National Park Authority heard Graham Kemp's scheme to open the hut on the seafront Quarterdeck at Robin Hood's Bay had triggered "consternation" from some villagers.

Mr Kemp told the meeting between 1,600 to 2,200 visitors a day visited the Quarterdeck and dismissed objectors' claims it was "an area of contemplation and tranquility".

Louise Shackleton, on behalf of more than 50 residents objecting to the proposal, said the village already had 22 food outlets and the tea hut would take tourists away from the hub of the village.

The committee decided there was a demand for the tea hut and said claims it could lead to firms such as Greggs setting up seafront kiosks were a "vast exaggeration".

Lewis DagnallImage source, Sheffield City Council

A protester accused of breaching a High Court injunction banning people from taking action against tree felling in Sheffield had his case dismissed yesterday.

Mr Brooke was one of four people taken to court for allegedly breaching the injunction.

Now the council wants to extend the existing injunction for a further three years, but Councillor Lewis Dagnall hopes both sides will compromise this summer and allow the work to continue.

Thousands of trees have been felled in Sheffield as part of the council's 25-year £2bn Streets Ahead project.

The council says only trees that are diseased, damaging or dangerous are being removed.

But campaigners say many are felled because their roots are in the way of resurfacing methods.

    Quote Message

We want to get to a position where it's not necessary to have a High Court injunction, to prevent people from dangerously entering health and safety barriers to prevent work taking place."

Lewis Dagnall, Cabinet Member for Environment and Streetscene

The shop was also caught selling alcohol to under 18s on two occasions in the last two years.
