  4. Council plans to extend tree protesters injunctionpublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 22 June 2018

Sheffield City Council is looking to extend the existing injunction it has to stop people from taking direct action to prevent trees being cut down.

    Tree feller

The current injunction expires on 25 July, and anyone breaking the order will be in contempt of court and could face a fine or even a prison sentence.

The dispute between the council and protesters surrounds a 25-year, £2.2bn contract between the council and Amey.

Amey is due to resurface all Sheffield's roads by 2020.

In doing so, it's tasked with maintaining roadside trees.

The council says only street trees that are diseased, damaging or dangerous are being removed.

But protesters say many are felled because their roots are simply in the way of resurfacing methods.

Two weeks ago two protesters received two month prison sentences, suspended for a year, for breaching the injunction.

The bird is one of four chicks living at the cathedral.

They're the second set to be born at the Minster to a pair of peregrines who took up residence a few years ago.

The four young birds were ringed earlier this month so they can be traced when they eventually leave the nest.
