    Plans to reduce black bin collections in Sheffield to once a month have been denied by the City Council, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    A comment on the Facebook page of the Sharrow Vale Community Association, external says the development was revealed by a council employee.

    "After speaking with a council officer over the telephone, I can confirm the council is considering reducing black bin collections to once per month," it states.

    Robert Dodds, who runs the forum, said he spoke to the council's waste management provider who told him the authority was considering monthly collections.

    Sheffield City Council reduced recycling collections to once a month last year in a bid to save £3.6m per year.

    Gillian Charters, head of waste management at Sheffield City Council, said: "We are not changing our black bin collection frequency, they will still be collected every two weeks."

    A public consultation's beginning in York on whether clean air zones should be set up in parts of the city.

    The zones are designed to cut pollution from traffic fumes and could see drivers banned from leaving their engines idling as they wait to pick people up.

    Some roads into the city could also be made off-limits to some drivers.

    The World Health Organisation named York as one of the worst places in the country for air pollution last month.

    A man from Bradford is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today charged with terrorism offences.

    Asim Majid, 29, of Cranbourne Road, Bradford, was arrested by counter terrorism officers last week.

    He is accused of possessing material useful to a terrorist and of funding terrorism.

    A would-be bank robber who dressed as a police officer to take three women and a girl hostage to try to steal £500,000 has been jailed for 23 years.

    Michael Dunphy kidnapped a bank worker and her daughter as she picked her up from school in Rotherham in November.

    At the bank Dunphy and the rest of the gang kidnapped two more employees and forced them to open the safe but fled empty handed when police were called.

    Judge Robert Bartfield described Dunphy, 45, as a "chilling" individual.

    Dunphy of Hyde, Greater Manchester, was jailed for 18 years with an extension period of five years at Sheffield Crown Court.

    A lap dancing club in Sheffield has had its operating licence renewed despite objections.

    The club, on Brown Street, has operated for 15 years but needed to renew a sexual entertainment venue licence to remain open.

    Sheffield City Council received more than 150 objections to the club's licence application this year.

    Sheffield MPs, Sheffield Hallam University and local businesses all expressed concerns.

    Campaigners for and against the club demonstrated outside the council meeting held to discuss its licence renewal bid.

    The chair of Licensing in Sheffield, Councillor David Barker said: "We could find no strong evidence of poor practices or detrimental impact on the local area arising from the operation of the club."

    Rail services in Yorkshire will be hit today by the second of three planned strikes this week.

    Workers on Northern services are staging a 24-hour stoppage.

    Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union are taking action as part of a long-running dispute over the role of guards and driver-only-operated trains.

    Northern says the majority of its available trains will run from 07:00 until 19:00 and it expects all services to be busy.

    Further walkouts are planned for Saturday.

    Customers have reacted angrily to delays and overcrowding, following the introduction of new timetables, and strike action has also been questioned.

    The union claims imposing driver-only services is a risk to public safety.

    A woman has been rescued from the upstairs window of her house in York after becoming trapped by a ground floor blaze.

    Fire crews were called to the terraced house in the Layerthorpe area earlier.

    The woman, in her 30s, was treated at the scene for the effects of breathing in smoke.

    Her two pets were also rescued.

    The black Ford Ranger was stopped in Bingley, near Bradford, after a chase which involved the police helicopter.

    It happened in the early hours of this morning, with one man being arrested.

    Members of North Yorkshire County Council's scrutiny of health committee will be told on Friday that NHS England, Health Education England and the dental profession have launched a review after some dentists in the county handed back their NHS contracts.

    Councillors have previously raised concerns about access to NHS dentistry in some areas of the county, such as the Harrogate and Craven areas.

    The meeting is expected to hear that NHS England has put interim solutions in place to ensure patients in the county can continue to access a dentist.
