  1. Former club secretary loses bid to separate Hillsborough trialpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 17 July 2018

    A bid by the former Sheffield Wednesday club secretary to have his trial heard in a separate courtroom from Hillsborough match commander David Duckenfield has been rejected.

    Graham Mackrell, 68, is charged with breaching health and safety and safety at sports ground legislation following a fatal crush on the terraces at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in April 1989.

    Mr Duckenfield, 73, is accused of the gross negligence manslaughter of 95 Liverpool supporters.

    Earlier, lawyers for Mackrell argued that his case should be heard by a different jury.

    But the application was turned down by a judge at Preston Crown Court and both men will stand trial together on January 14 next year.

    Special coins have been created to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS and you might find one if you visit Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield today.

    The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust has been specially selected by the Royal Mint to distribute the special 10 pence coins.

    They are in the tills in their restaurant and volunteer-run cafes across the trust.

    There's been another big drop in unemployment in Yorkshire and the Humber.

    Latest figures show the number of people out of work in our region fell by 19,000, between March and May, to 122,000.

    Unemployment now stands at 1.4 million nationally.

  4. 'Spike' in domestic abuse calls to police during World Cuppublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 17 July 2018

    The hot summer and the World Cup are being blamed for a spike in calls to West Yorkshire police about domestic abuse.

    The force says at the peak, on 7 July - the day of the England v Sweden game - officers took 297 calls, 128 more than on the same day in 2017.

    They also took a high number of calls during both the Croatia and Belgium games, as England progressed towards the semi-final.

    Officers added it wasn't just the World Cup that was to blame for the rise in calls, with the common theme being people drinking too much.

  5. Man arrested after Doncaster stabbingpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 17 July 2018

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing in Doncaster last week.

    Shop cordoned off in Stainforth

    The man, a 30-year-old from Stainforth, is in police custody following his arrest this morning.

    Emergency services were called to a shop on Field Road, Stainforth, after a 27-year-old had been stabbed in the upper body on 11 July.

    He remains in hospital.

  9. 30-minute health walk launched in Cottinghampublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 17 July 2018

    A new 30-minute walk, designed for people who do little or no exercise, is being launched in Cottingham.

    It is part of the national Walking for Health initiative and offers led walks for beginners.

    The new walk will take place every other Monday at 10:30, starting on 23 July from the Cottingham Sports Centre and will take half an hour.

    Two dachshund puppies, who became stuck on the roof of property in North Yorkshire, were rescued after becoming a little too adventurous.

    Mufasa and Simba, named after characters from the Lion King film, had only learned to walk yesterday, according to their owners.

    But that didn't stop them stretching their little legs and exploring the roof of a property in Bentham, North Yorkshire.

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the dogs had "apparently used the fire escape stair to go up rather than down."

    The daring duo were rescued unharmed by their owners before firefighters arrived to help.

  12. Community archaeological dig beginspublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 17 July 2018

    An archaeological dig has started near Elsecar, Barnsley, with members of the public getting the chance to get their hands dirty.

    Over the next two weeks, archaeologists will be working at Forge playing fields in Milton, to uncover what they say is one of the great forgotten ironworks of the north.

    The Milton Ironworks were opened in the late 1790's by the Walker family of Rotherham.

    Some of their initial finds include bone, glass bottles and pottery.

    For the first time, archaeologists using old maps and the latest in geophysical technology will be excavating part of the site to see what remains of the ironworks beneath the ground.

  13. Teenager critical after serious accident on A19published at 10:58 British Summer Time 17 July 2018

    A 15-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being involved in a collision with a car on the A19 in North Yorkshire.

    It happened outside the Eggborough Power Station at about 21:15 last night and involved a black Volkswagen Passat and a white BMX style pedal cycle.

    Police say the teenager was taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries.

    The road was closed for six hours while officers examined the scene

    Anyone who saw the collision is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.

    The Elloughton-cum-Brough Town Council meets tonight to discuss the fate of Brough's Community Centre.

    At the end of June, all of the community groups, classes and activities that use the centre were told that they will need to find alternative accommodation by the end of August.

    It's because the charity which runs the centre has decided it can no longer keep the venue open.

    The centre's management committee says a change in library opening hours and the retirement of their current caretaker are among the reasons the venue will close it's doors to the public on 1 September.

  17. Group formed to investigate crimes against birds of preypublished at 10:14 British Summer Time 17 July 2018

    It's been revealed North Yorkshire has the UK's worst record on prosecuting crimes against birds of prey and the highest number of criminal attacks on them.

    There were 39 cases of nests being destroyed and birds being shot, trapped and poisoned between 2011 and 2015.

    A report by the county's Police and Crime Commissioner says the force's number of wildlife crime officers has gone up from 14 in 2015 to 20, and will increase further.

    There are also proposals to create a specialist panel to look at why there have been no prosecutions, despite an increase in the number of wildlife crime officers.

    Hambleton District councillor Peter Wilkinson, said: "The government figures represent the tip of the iceberg and more solutions to get to the root of the issue are desperately needed."
