    Just when we all got used to the M621 roadworks being over and done with in Leeds, new works are set to begin on the M62 next week.

    But, we're promised - by Highways England - that "drivers will benefit from reduced congestion" as a result of the work.

    The section in question is J27 (that's the Ikea junction to you and me).

    Highways England say the "scheme will address congestion on this vital route but we should "allow extra time" for journeys.

    When it comes to raising awareness of the plight of an animal species, what better way to do it than getting your kit off and walking around a wildlife park?

    That's exactly what happened over the weekend at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster.

    More than 100 people took part in the event which raised almost £5,000 to help conservation efforts for endangered polar bears throughout the world.

    The park itself has four of the beasts; who knows what they made of the runners who jogged the 3/4 mile course in nothing but running shoes.

    The park were keen to stress that the event was strictly 18+ and took place in the evening when the park was closed.

  4. Cayton garage fire spreads to whole housepublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 16 July 2018

    Fire crews have been tackling a blaze at a house in Cayton near Scarborough.

    They were called just after 11:00 this morning.

    The fire started in the garage and then spread to the rest of the house.

    Fifteen firefighters tackled the blaze and an aerial ladder was also called to the scene.

    One person was treated by ambulance crews for the effects of breathing in smoke.

    Bradford Council say that stocks are "urgently" low and say that anyone with that blood group can make an appointment at the local donation centre.

    The problem is not just confined to the city, it's a national shortage and type O Negative can be given safely to patients with other blood groups.

    O Negative is also the only safe option when a patient's blood group is unknown or not immediately available.

    A safety inspection of the track between Brough and Hull means some lines are blocked.

    Otley's Lizzie Deignan will join the new Trek Factory Racing team when she returns to racing next season.

    The 29-year-old former world champion is not competing this season as she is expecting her first child in September.

    She was announced as the headline signing for the new UCI women's WorldTour team at its launch on Monday.

    "I chose Trek because rather than see me as a risk in pregnancy, they saw me as an investment and as a valued athlete," said Deignan.

    Police in Leeds say they are "very concerned" for a Leeds woman who has gone missing after boarding a train to Scarborough this morning.

    Denise Birdsall left her home in Garforth at about 09:30 this morning and arrived at the coast at about 11:40.

    The 52-year-old was last seen wearing pink tracksuit bottoms, a baggy lilac jumper and black trainers.

    West Yorkshire double glazing firm Safestyle has been fined after it pleaded guilty to unlawful business practices - which included pressure sales techniques.

    Sheffield Crown Court was told some canvassers for the Bradford-based company had lied to customers and others had ignored requests to leave.

    The prosecution said one salesman physically prevented the customer closing the door and appeared to be looking for a fight.

    Earlier this year the firm issued a profit warning.

    Rain has helped efforts to stop the fire spreading with grass now being seen growing back.

    Hundreds of firefighters have been helping battle the blaze, with crews from across the country joining in the effort.

    Now crews from North Yorkshire are standing down from the incident.

    Four men and a woman have been arrested in Sheffield and Somercotes after a burglary in Hucknall.

    Nottinghamshire Police were called to Maple Leaf Way at about 02:00 this morning to a report that several people had fled the scene after a burglary.

    A 27-year-old man who confronted the group was treated in hospital for an injury to his hand.

    Police tracked one car they believed to be involved to Sheffield, where three men, aged 23, 27 and 23 were arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary by South Yorkshire Police following a collision.

    Another car was found in Mount Crescent, off the Clover Nook Estate in Somercotes, where a 23-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man were arrested, also on suspicion of aggravated burglary by Derbyshire Police.

    Thieves who target train passengers by stealing luggage and smartphones are facing a crackdown from police.

    A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a Barnsley grassland fire damaged cars yesterday.

    The fire, which was in field just off Burton Road, Monk Bretton, saw grassland on fire which later spread to a car, causing damage.

    The 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and criminal damage in connection to the incident and currently remains in police custody.

    The TransPennine Trail and Wolds Way footpath has been closed between Hessle and North Ferriby to allow Network Rail engineers to check the railway embankment.

    A crack was found in the footpath which runs alongside the Humber and the main railway line.

    Network Rail say their engineers are looking into ground movement and they expects this work to take up to 10 weeks.

    They say some of the works means they'll have to shut the footpath for safety reasons.
