  3. Iron Age artefacts unearthed at York roundaboutpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 20 July 2018

    A settlement thought to be 2,500 years old has been unearthed at a York roundabout.

    The remains were found at Wetherby Road roundabout during work on the city's outer ring road.

    The earliest discovery a large ring ditch which could have been an enclosure or roundhouse appears to date from the Iron Age and is thought to be one of the biggest to be unearthed in York.

    A nearby ditch has also produced a series of finds, including decorated pottery fragments.

    Fragments of possible pumice stone, a volcanic rock not found locally, have also been discovered.

    This is the first of seven roundabouts on the A1237 set for improvements over the next four years.

  6. Poskus death: Woman charged with assisting offenderpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 20 July 2018

    A 42-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with assisting an offender in connection with the death of a Lithuanian man in Hull last month.

    Janina Milieskiene, 42, of Peel Street, Hull, appeared before the city's magistrates earlier and was given conditional bail.

    Ms Milieskiene is to make her first appearance at the city's crown court on 24 July.

    Rolandas Poskus, 52, was found dead on a grassed area on Dane Park Road on 15 June.

    Two men Stanislovas Bozys, 28, and 23-year-old Mantas Pundzius, both of Hull, are charged with Mr Poskus' murder.

    The men are due to stand trial in Hull on 3 December.

    A large power cut has affected around 1,700 properties in the Avenues area of Hull today.

    Humberside Fire & Rescue say it's due to an incident at an electricity substation.

    Northern Powergrid says most of the supply has been restored but is advising customers to reset trip switches if their electricity is not back on.

    The train and bus stations were evacuated after security found a "suspicious package" on Bridge Street.

    West Yorkshire Police arrived at 11:15 and cordoned the area off.

    The cordon has now been removed.

    Bin workers in Kirklees have voted to continue talks in their ongoing dispute over holiday leave and claims of bullying.

    Members of the Unison union didn't vote to accept or reject a new offer from Kirklees Council at a meeting this morning.

    It's part of an ongoing dispute in Kirklees over claims some workers have been refused leave to help dying relatives or sick children.

    A new vote will be held in two weeks' time.

    A rare gold and enamel ring created in memory of Lord Byron, following his death in 1824, goes under the hammer in North Yorkshire tomorrow.

    There are only two other Lord Byron memorial rings of this type.

    One is held in the Pforzheimer Collection in the New York Public Library.

    The other, sold at auction in 2013, contained a lock of Byron’s hair.

    The ring is thought to have come from Newstead Abbey, Byron’s Nottinghamshire home and is expected to fetch between £3,000 and £5,000.

    Lord Byron, the notorious poet, peer and politician, was the subject of cult-like worship among the English upper classes.

    He rose to fame after the publication of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, the poetic tale of a young aristocrat’s travels in Europe.

    Bradford Interchange station has been evacuated after security found a "suspicious package" on Bridge Street.

    A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said they were called there at 11:15 and officers are at the scene now.

    They described it as an "ongoing incident" and a cordon remains in place.

    The NHS is being urged to reconsider plans to turn the former Bootham Park Hospital in York into luxury flats.

    The psychiatric unit closed three years ago because of patient safety concerns.

    The property includes former estate cottages, a gate lodge, outbuildings and open parkland.

    David Elstob, principal transaction manager, said: "We know this historic site is important to people in York and we are working closely with heritage specialists and local organisations."

    He added: "Proceeds from the sale will be reinvested in the NHS."

    Three Ron Dearing University Technical College (UTC) students, Nathan Tennison, Ellie Colclough and Adam Meese, demonstrated out-of-this-world maths and physics skills to prevent an asteroid apocalypse.

    The 17-year-olds were named as finalists in the national UTC Space Tech Challenge for their project which was based on a real scenario when scientists discovered in 2004 that an asteroid had a 2.7% possibility of hitting Earth in a cataclysmic impact in 2029.

    The students worked out the sophisticated maths and physics needed to change its trajectory.

    MPs from across the North East and Yorkshire are to be invited to see for themselves the pressures placed on a coastal authority by rough sleeping, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Scarborough Borough Council is to host a meeting as it looks at ways to tackle the issue in the towns of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.

    The council is to invite MPs that cover the area from Redcar and Cleveland down to Hull in the south of the area to a meeting at Scarborough Town Hall to ask them to lobby the government for more funding to tackle the issue.

    Cllr Heather Phillips, who chaired Scarborough's Rough Sleeping Task Group, said: "We are going to end up like Brighton with people on every street corner and it's not fair. We can't have the people of Scarborough suffer as we have not advocated enough for them."

    Two teenagers have been arrested in Bradford in connection with a burglary which saw a car stolen.

    A 15-year-old and a 17-year-old have been released under investigation after a black BMW was stolen.

    West Yorkshire Police said thieves forced their way into an address on Park Drive, Farnley on Wednesday afternoon.

    They believe there were four or five people in the vehicle that drove towards Bradford.

    The car was found locked and secured on Cleckheaton Road.
