  19. More calls for under pressure Yorkshire MP to quitpublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 20 July 2018

There are more calls for a Yorkshire MP to resign as Chief Whip.

    Julian SmithImage source, Getty Images

Julian Smith, the Conservative member for Skipton and Ripon, is facing calls to resign if he fails to explain how voting pacts were broken during this week's knife-edge Commons votes on Brexit.

He's accused of putting pressure on some Conservative MPs when they were supposed to abstain, because they were "paired" with opposition MPs who were absent.

Pairing is a parliamentary convention - pairs of MPs on different sides of the Commons agree not to vote, so an absence, such as maternity leave, does not count against a member.

The Conservative Party chairman, Brandon Lewis, has apologised after voting when he shouldn't have, as he was paired with the Liberal Democrats Deputy Leader Jo Swinson, who's on maternity leave.

The website ConservativeHome says the MP now "lacks credibility" and "must go".
