  1. Tommy Robinson appeal: Case to be reheard 'as soon as possible'published at 12:43 British Summer Time 1 August 2018

    Tommy Robinson, the far-right activist who was jailed for admitting being in contempt of court, has been released from prison on bail.

    Robinson, 35 whose real name is Stephen Yaxley Lennon received a 13-month jail term in May after he filmed outside Leeds Crown Court during a trial.

    He partially won his appeal against a contempt of court finding due to technical flaws by the judge who jailed him.

    The Court of Appeal ruled Robinson should be released on bail from prison and attend the Old Bailey for the Leeds allegations to be reheard "as soon as possible".

    He is also banned from coming within 400 metres of Leeds Crown Court.

    A giant game of human chess, with a Hull twist, has been played in the city centre today.

    Fortunately for the participants it isn't a dangerous game of Wizard's Chess as in the first Harry Potter film.

    This version is rather more sedate.

    This particular game is known as the EverGreen game played in the mid 19th century, but as you can see all the pieces have been redesigned to give them a a unique Hull reference.

    It's part of the British Chess Championship, external which is taking place in Hull for the first time all this week.

    North Yorkshire Police have released CCTV pictures after a 19-year-old woman was seriously sexually assaulted in York last month.

    Police say they want to speak to the man pictured, after a 19-year-old girl was sexually attacked in the Walmgate area of York in the early hours of Thursday 12 July.

    The man they want to speak to is described as being white, of stocky build, with broad shoulders and stubble.

    He was wearing chino style shorts and a polo top.

    Detectives in Leeds have cordoned off a street as they investigate a possible shooting in the city this morning.

    West Yorkshire Police say officers were called just after 02:15 to Back Thornville Row in Hyde Park.

    They had taken a call from a member of the public of a possible firearms discharge.

    Armed officers were sent to the scene, but found no evidence of any injuries or damage to nearby houses.

    Forensic officers are still at the scene, but they told the BBC early investigations show blank firing ammunition was used with no evidence of an actual gun being fired.

    To celebrate Yorkshire Day, an artist has created a huge mural in Sheffield peppered with familiar Yorkshire places.

    A procession of mayors and lord mayors has moved through Ripon in North Yorkshire to celebrate Yorkshire Day.

    Earlier the city's Mayor, Pauline McHardy, said the celebration presented the perfect opportunity for locals to "come together and celebrate where they come from."

    Yorkshire Day was first celebrated on 1 August 1975.

    One of the key features of the day is the reading of the Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity

    The date was picked as it was on that day in 1759 soldiers from Yorkshire regiments picked white roses to lie alongside fallen comrades on the battlefield of Minden in Germany.

    A special trail of plaques is being unveiled across Leeds this morning ahead of Pride weekend, including at the BBC studios.

    Its to celebrate some of the best-known and less well-recognised people and events that have shaped life for the LGBT+ community in the city.

    All of the people featured on the plaques were chosen by members of the public, Olympic boxer Nicola Adams and fashion designer and theatre critic Cyril Livingstone.

    Angela Morley - who became the first openly transgender person nominated for an Academy Award - was unvield at the BBC studios a little earlier this morning.

    A man from North Yorkshire is embarking on an epic challenge.

    Ben Davis, from Harrogate, plans to run around the perimeter of Yorkshire, to raise money for the charity CALM, external, after suffering a bout of mental ill health.

    He'll run more than 450 miles and climb more than 41,000 ft.

    Just to make it a proper challenge he's doing it with all his camping equipment on his back!

    He's setting off today - with it being Yorkshire Day - from Scarborough and is aiming to finish right back where he started in just 18 days.

    So just the equivalent of a marathon a day then!

    It's in the second round of the Citi Open in Washington.

    Edmund is the marginal favourite given Murray's injury problems of the last 12 months, which have lead to his lengthy absence.

    Edmund beat him at Eastbourne in a Wimbledon warm up tournament, and Murray has not played in any competitions since.

    The RSPCA is investigating after two identical kittens were rescued four miles apart from each other last week.

    The first distinctive-looking grey and ginger kitten had suffered serious leg damage after getting caught in a fenn trap in Castleton near Whitby on Wednesday 25 July.

    Another was found three days earlier in Lealholm, with symptoms of suspected poisoning.

    The animal charity says the kittens were less than eight-weeks-old.

    East Yorkshire parents are being urged to ensure they and their children are protected, after more than 70 cases of measles were reported in West Yorkshire.

    Large numbers of cases have been recorded in Italy, France and Greece as well as in Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Russia and Albania.

    With 757 cases now reported in parts of the UK, including 73 in Yorkshire and the Humber since January, Public Health England is advising people travelling to Europe this summer to ensure their families are vaccinated properly before travelling.

    Janet Cairns, Head of Midwifery at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said catching measles during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or premature labour.

    Symptoms include a rash, which usually spreads from the hairline down to cover the body, a high temperature and a dry cough.

    Affected people may also have red, inflamed eyes and a runny nose before the rash appears.

    One of the UKs most persecuted birds of prey, the hen harrier, has been successfully bred in the Yorkshire Dales for the first time since 2007.

    A pair has produced four chicks in the South Lakeland part of the park.

    Natural England has attached satellite tags to two of the birds so they can track their movements.

    Two hen harriers attempted to nest in the area last year, but both attempts were thought to have failed because of natural predation.

    An overturned lorry is blocking the A614 Rawcliffe Road at Airmyn Road near Goole.

    Traffic at the roundabout and past the overturned vehicle is said to be slow.

    The lorry is expected to be recovered soon.

    Police say a man found on Hall Ings in Bradford is now in a very serious condition in hospital.

    He was found by paramedics at 04:47 today.

    Hall Ings from Jacob's Well into the city is now open to vehicles, however Hall Ings out of the city centre is still closed.

    Officers say it's likely to be closed for a long time while investigations are carried out.
