  1. Too hot to work?published at 08:40 British Summer Time 1 August 2018

The Hull East MP is backing calls for a legal maximum workplace temperature.

Karl Turner the MP for Hull East

The Trades Union Congress wants the law changed, but the Health and Safety Executive say the government has no plans to change the law.

However, there is guidance for a minimum workplace temperature.

Labour's Karl Turner says employees should not be forced to work in stifling hot conditions and the government needs to step in.

    Quote Message

At the moment unfortunately it’s just a matter of guidance and a matter for each individual employer to decide whether it's too hot for people to work. That's not good enough. We need the law to kick in and ensure people are not expected to work in conditions which are completely intolerable."

Sarah Khan, a single mum from Bradford in West Yorkshire, was given a bed by the charity for her four-year-old son Mikhail, after he'd been sleeping in her bed.

"He was keeping me up all night kicking, and I was surviving on just two hours' sleep, so obviously I was getting poorly myself," she said.

"In 2018 you shouldn't have to choose whether to feed your kid or wash their clothes, the reality is we're having to choose."

The charity has written to politicians in 10 areas of high deprivation asking them to help resolve the issue.

Work is under way to excavate a former World War One Prisoner of War camp in North Yorkshire.

    Children at dig

A team of school students and archaeologists are digging trenches at the site in Skipton to reveal what conditions were like there 100 years ago.

Known locally as Raikeswood Camp, it became a prison for captured German officers late in the Great War.

When the prisoners returned home they published a book of diaries and sketches, some of which you can see pictured here.

In 2015, a copy of the book was found in Skipton library and translated by students at the University of Leeds.

Now, to mark its 100th anniversary, archaeologists are digging the site to find out more about the camp where German officers were incarcerated from early 1918 until late 1919.

They're hoping to find remains of the camp's huts and are also carrying out small-scale digs in residents' gardens.
