    Campaigners say Penny Pie Park (pictured) could be lost if a roundabout is built and Dodworth Road is widened.

    The planned road is part of plans to cut journey times to the M1 motorway by up to 10 minute, according to Barnsley Council.

  3. Burglars steal jewellery while owners still at homepublished at 08:33 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    Almost £20,000 worth of jewellery has been stolen from a house in Dunswell, external, near Hull.

    The house, on The Meadows, was burgled on Wednesday 25 July while the owner was in the back garden.

    The intruder got in through the front door and stole more than 20 items, including a Vivienne Westwood watch and a pair of Chanel sunglasses.

    Police are appealing for information.

    More than 50 pubs closed in Yorkshire in the first six months of this year.

    The figures from the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) show that across the UK, 18 pubs close every week.

    The organisation says pubs play a very important role in our national economy, contributing £23.1bn annually. They also provide a wealth of social benefits, according to Camra.

    The decline's being blamed on rising tax on alcohol and people choosing to drink at home because of the extra expense.

  5. Dental student from Sheffield denies funding terrorismpublished at 07:59 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    A man charged with funding terrorism messaged a friend to say "we need an Islamic state", a jury has heard.

    Opening the case against dental student Abdurahman Kaabar, 22, the prosecution told a jury at Sheffield Crown Court that he transferred funds to his brother Mohammed Kaabar in Syria.

    Abdurahman Kaabar, of Martin Street in Sheffield, denies funding terrorism.

    The jury heard there was "no doubt" the 22-year-old had arranged to transfer funds to his brother.

    Police searching for a man missing from Selby in North Yorkshire say they are "very concerned" for his welfare.

    Darren Mawson, 55, was last seen leaving his home in the town at about 14:00 yesterday.

    Mr Mawson is 6ft 2ins tall with very short hair and a black moustache.

    When last seen, he was wearing orange work shorts and a vest top.

    He is also wearing a black strap on his wrist for a recent broken arm that is still healing.

    It's thought he may have travelled in a red Ford car to the Ryedale or Scarborough areas of North Yorkshire.

    Police want anyone who sees Mr Mawson to contact them immediately.

  7. Tale of two Ingletons: MP's error boosts beauty spotpublished at 07:30 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    A village tourist attraction which was catapulted to national attention when an MP mistakenly praised it during a speech is seeking permission to help deal with the subsequent surge in visitors.

    The four-mile trail and waterfalls at Ingleton in North Yorkshire were already popular when, in 2014, Bishop Auckland's Labour MP Helen Goodman boosted the beauty spot in error during a speech.

    She made her comments as she opened a fair in a County Durham village which is also called Ingleton (above right)...which is actually 70 miles from the North Yorkshire attraction.

    The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is now set to consider changes at Ingleton due to the increasing numbers of cars queuing through the village to access the beauty spot.

    Humberside Police are trying to identify this man after an attempted robbery in Beverley, external.

    It happened at about 03:45 on Monday morning at the 24-hour Sewell's Petrol Station on Holme Church Lane.

    Officers say they believe he had some kind of weapon on him, but ran off towards the Grovehill roundabout before he was able to take anything.

    Anyone with information about his identity, or about the incident, is being asked to call the police on 101.

    A police force criticised for leaving thousands of crimes unrecorded and for its handling of the Rotherham abuse scandal still "requires improvement", inspectors have said.

    The South Yorkshire Police force is still not recording about 17,000 crimes a year, many cases involving domestic abuse and vulnerable victims, a report by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services said, external.

    But it said the force has improved since being criticised in 2014.

    The force said "safeguarding was still undertaken in all appropriate cases".

    According to the report, which covers June to November 2017, 10.5% of reported violent offences and domestic abuse crimes were unrecorded.

    But it praised the force for its "highly-accurate recording of reported sexual offences" and "good crime-recording of modern slavery crimes".

    Four more people have been arrested after a man was shot and later died in hospital in Leeds.

    Christopher Lewis, 24, was shot in Reginald Street in Chapeltown at about 19:15 last Wednesday.

    A 26–year-old man and a 23-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are still in police custody.

    Over the weekend a 27-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were arrested, but have been released pending further investigation.

    A 24-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, who were previously arrested have also been released.

    An application has been submitted to Sheffield City Council to convert a former shop into a new cereal cafe, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Submitted by SLA Design on behalf of Sharez Akhtar, the change of use application is for a former stop smoking shop on Charles Street.

    A report by Paul Higgins of SLA Design states there will be no external alterations to the premises, but internal shop-fitting is required to change the layout, along with new signage.

    The new venture is set to be called The Coco Cereal Cafe, according to the report.

    A separate application has been made for the new signage.

    A decision has not been made on the application.

    The rider hit two women in the Market Place at about 13:20 on Monday 30 July.

    He initially stopped but didn't leave his details.

    Officers are asking him or anyone who saw the incident to get in touch.

  18. 83-year-old woman injured in 'nasty' muggingpublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 6 August 2018

    Police want to speak to this man after an 83-year-old woman was mugged in Scarborough and left with an injured arm.

    It happened on Saturday near shops on Wreyfield Drive when the lady was assaulted by a man who then ran off with her purse.

    The woman was left with an injury on her arm, but didn't need to go to hospital.

    She'd been helped by several people.

    North Yorkshire Police say they want to speak to them as they may have information that could help them catch the man who assaulted the woman.

    Hull New Theatre has paid tribute to Chuckle Brother Barry Elliot, who has died at the age of 73.

    Barry and his brother Paul were due to star in this year's panto, Cinderella at the New Theatre in December.

    The comedy duo had performed at the venue many times since 1995, including the 2012 pantomime Sleeping Beauty and more recently with their own children's touring production.
