The Press Association who analysed the figures found this was lower than in any four-week period under its predecessor Virgin Trains East Coast.

LNER said hot weather, infrastructure problems and the introduction of new timetables caused disruption at key locations such as London King's Cross and Leeds.

  20. Northern's 'twisting of words is positively Trump-esque'published at 12:28 British Summer Time 6 August 2018

A rail union has criticised "outrageous" claims by Northern for blaming cancellations on staff.

    Northern train

The company cancelled around 80 services across its network on Sunday, claiming some staff had "made themselves unavailable for work".

The explanation drew an angry response from the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT).

    Quote Message

It is outrageous for Northern to try and lump the blame for the crew shortages that led to widespread cancellations yesterday on their workforce.

    Quote Message

It is a scam to try and cover up the fact that they simply don't hire enough workers to fill their rosters.

    Quote Message

This garbage about 'staff making themselves unavailable' is a twisting of words that is positively Trump-esque and our members are rightly angry at the suggestion that the service chaos on successive Sundays is somehow down to them and not the company which has repeatedly shown itself as unfit to run a railway.

    Quote Message

They should be stripped of the franchise and the Northern routes should be nationalised.

    Mick Cash, RMT general secretary

Chaos on the Northern network, caused by a new timetable's introduction in May, has been the subject of much passenger misery this summer.

Services resumed last week after the operator ended up cancelling 165 daily train services until the end of July.
