    A police officer who tried to stop a dog attacking and fatally injuring a man in Huddersfield has been described as "courageous and resourceful".

    The officer arrived eight minutes after police were called on 15 August last year as 52-year-old David Ellam was being attacked by a dog and used a fire extinguisher to ward the animal off.

    He was followed by another officer who then tried to find the dog to stop it from attacking others, as Mr Ellam was treated by paramedics.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has to investigate all incidences where someone dies when the police have been in contact with them.

    Aaron Joseph, 30, was convicted in February of owning a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death and was jailed for 10 years.

    The black Labrador has undergone months of training and visited thousands of children in schools, colleges and activity groups across the area in readiness for his new role on Acorn Ward at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital.

    Hull-based charity Nice2bNice, external has teamed up with staff on the children’s surgical ward to provide young patients with weekly visits from Lewis.

    The founder of the Nice2bNice charity and Lewis’s owner, David Freer, will accompany him on the visits and says he's ready to start making patients smile. Looks like he's already a hit!

    The city is one of several UK cities with illegally high levels of pollution, with health experts saying air pollution is one of the biggest threats to public health.

    Government ministers plan to reduce the costs of poor air quality to society by an estimated £1bn every year by 2020.

    Leeds has come up with its own action plan which involves charging lorry companies and taxi firms with older diesel vehicles to drive into the city centre.

    Rail passengers can expect to see an increase in armed police at stations across Yorkshire following this morning's incident in London.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences after a car was crashed outside the Houses of Parliament, injuring several people.

    British Transport Police (BTP) says its officers will be "highly visible" onboard trains and at stations this afternoon and evening.

    Firefighters tackled two kitchen blazes in Doncaster overnight, saying both were cooking-related.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews went to a bungalow in Balby at about 20:20 last night and then another fire in Cantley at 02:40.

    Nobody was injured in the fires, but the fire service is asking people to clean out their ovens and grill pans to stop fires starting.

    A fake bus stop is to be installed at a Doncaster hospital to help people living with dementia.

    It's hoped the bus stop will help create a familiar environment for patients, making them feel more relaxed.

    A phone number on the flag will direct calls to Traveline and callers will be greeted with a "friendly and supportive" voice, with staff trained to handle calls from dementia patients.

    Hygena Kitchens tycoon Malcolm Healey bought the Warter Estate, near Pocklington, for £48m in 1998.

    He's now applied for permission to build an enormous country house there.

    The stately home which used to occupy the site, Warter Priory, was demolished in 1972.

    Two businesses in Hull were targeted by ram-raiders early this morning.

    Police received reports of a vehicle being driven into a bookmakers in Bransholme and a convenience store on Sutton Park.

    No-one was hurt in either incident, but both premises suffered damage.

    It's not yet known if anything was taken.

    Officers are guarding the scenes to allow forensic examinations to take place.

    Letters telling people their debit cards could "catch fire" is the latest scam concerning police in West Yorkshire.

    The error-ridden letter tells Barclays customers to post their debit card and PIN to an address in India as part of "an urgent recall".

    It claims the cards are spontaneously catching on fire in people's wallets.

    The letter claims the problem is due to a fault at a factory in "Molton Keynes".

    Jason Price, from West Yorkshire Police's cyber crime team, says the scam is "ridiculous", external.

    However, he warns people could still get caught out.

    Hull's joining a national campaign to help consumers make better choices about the fish they buy.

    The national campaign was launched at the London Olympics in 2012.

    Special constables are a voluntary role, but have the same powers as regular officers - applicants have to be able to give 16-hours a month after training.

    The force say it's particularly looking for minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities and volunteers from the LGBT+ community.

    In a bid to attract more people it's reduced the training schedule for successful candidates to 20 weeks - previously the training was spread over 30 weeks.

    Sheffield is hoping to become the UK's first Hepatitis C-free city.

    Hepatitis C is a virus that's transferred via the blood and can cause liver failure or even death if not treated.

    Sheffield is trialling a new scheme where those who've recovered from the disease are helping those who're infected to get medical help.

    Joe had Hep C and became a peer mentor for the Hepatitis C Trust after being released from prison.

    He says it's important for people to confront the virus.

    "Every time we get one person in for treatment, someone who picks up that medication, someone who finishes that medication, you get that sense that you've just saved their life.

    "It's a real sense of satisfaction."

    The force says this follows recent reports of arson attacks on vehicles in the city.
