West Yorkshire Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, says this summer's heatwave has "reignited" calls for police officers to be allowed to show their tattoos.

At the moment, officers are allowed to display "small, inoffensive and non-prominent" tattoos on their necks and hands, but tattooed arms must be covered up.

A union has described similar rules in Sheffield as "draconian", warning they risk undermining public support in the police.

Guy King, from the Police Federation, said: "They’ve been out there on duty in the 30-degree- plus heat with long sleeves and vests.

"They are having to cover up with black uniform shirts to comply with a policy which is seen to be out of step by both officers and the public.

“It’s not been nice for them at all and anything we can do to make them comfortable while on duty has to be a good thing."

It works by letting customers set up an "agreed personal password" with them, which the company will use if they call or visit them.

Yorkshire Water says people should always ask to see a caller's ID, not let them in until they've seen it and then call the company's offices if they are unsure.
