  2. Watch: Sheffield lottery funded project 'UK's favourite'published at 10:14 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    A para ice hockey team from Yorkshire has been voted the UK's "favourite lottery funded sports project".

    The Sheffield Steelkings, who play and train in the city, beat 700 entries from across the country.

    Made up of disabled and able-bodied players, the Steelkings have been competing for more than four years.

    They says attempts to contact the company who provide the uniforms, School Trends, have been unsuccessful.

    School Trends say that unfortunately some orders have been delayed due to a technical glitch.

    The cost of garden waste collections could rise by around 40% in some parts of North Yorkshire due to a cost-cutting scheme by the county council.

    Drivers in the Beverley can breathe a sigh of relief as a major project to resurface roads has been completed.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council says £995,000 has been spent on resurfacing several roads and mini roundabouts in the town centre and in Leconfield.

    The work started in May and the council say the work is now finished.

    A lorry carrying a "ginormous" load has broken down the M18, which will lead to a road closure later tonight.

    The lorry has been moving a 150-tonne load but broke down between junction one and junction two on the M18 northbound.

    There's a road closure in place today. with the complex recovery taking place from 20:00 tonight, affecting traffic for 14 hours.

    A North Yorkshire homeowner has been left with a "huge amount of damage to repair" after a driver crashed into his property.

    The car also hit the garage door, wall and a vehicle at the side of the A162 in Towton, near Tadcaster.

    Police shared photographs of the damage on Twitter and say the driver has now been arrested.

    The former cabinet minister Lord Blunkett says it's deeply regrettable that MP Frank Field has resigned the Labour whip over the issue.

    Lord Blunkett says he's extremely concerned by the party's handling of the matter and says Jeremy Corbyn has a few days in which to sort it out.

    "I hope that common sense will now prevail and that they'll ensure that outstanding cases, and there are a large number of accusations about anti-Semitism are dealt with decisively."

    The link road between the A1(M) northbound and the A64 eastbound has been closed to recover a lorry which has crashed onto the embankment.

    Traffic officers and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews remain on the scene near Bramham Crossroads.

    Highways England says it "will advise once we have indication on duration of closure."

    The annual Freedom Festival gets under way in Hull today, with thousands of visitors expected over the weekend.

    The festival includes more than 200 performances, including acrobats scaling the front of Hull College, a parade of giant puppets and street theatre.

    Rehearsals have been taking place across the city centre and yesterday a giant model of the moon was lifted into place at Hull Minster.

    Taxi fares in the Harrogate could become some of the most expensive in the country with drivers saying they are currently losing money on short journeys.

    Drivers in Harrogate District want fares to go up to cover the increased cost of insurance, fuel and maintenance.

    Harrogate Borough Council say at this stage "any increase in fares is just a proposal and it would be wrong for us to pre-judge or predict the outcome of the meeting" which will take place next week.

  13. Arrests after armed robbery attemptpublished at 07:59 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    A man and woman have been arrested following an attempted armed robbery at a Barnsley convenience store.

    At around 07.10 on Tuesday 31 July, a masked man went into A and H Convenience store on Lorne Road in Thurnscoe and threatened staff with a knife.

    The shopkeeper confronted the robber, who ran from the store and got into a silver Vauxhall Astra waiting outside.

    The vehicle was later found on Canberra Rise in Bolton upon Dearne where it had crashed into a fence. Two men were seen running from the scene.

    Police arrested a 25-year-old man and 19-year-old woman, both from the Worsborough area, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit an armed robbery.

    Two men, believed to be involved in the robbery, remains outstanding and police are asking anyone with information or who saw anything to contact them.

    A stately home in North Yorkshire has started using a Chinese app which lets people pay with their mobile phones, to take advantage of its popularity with Asian tourists.

    Castle Howard became famous in the Far East after Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou had his wedding reception there in 2015.

    The tourist attraction will take money from guests using WeChat Pay, which is part of China's popular WeChat social media network, used by more than a billion people.

    Abbigail Ollive said: "It's what our Chinese visitors use, it's kind of the replacement for Facebook, Twitter, the social media platforms we have here, they do everything through WeChat."

    A thief used a magnet to steal a man's wallet after pushing him into a canal in Mexborough.

    The victim was by the canal on land between the River Don and Mexborough New Cut, Doncaster Road, when he was approached by another man.

    The man then pushed the 31-year-old victim into the canal, before stealing his wallet using a fishing magnet.

    He then left the area heading towards Denaby.

    The victim managed to get out of the canal on his own and was not injured.

    The incident happened at around 18:30 on Friday 13 July and South Yorkshire Police are asking for the public's help to identify the man in the e-fit above.

  16. Police warn drivers using phones to snap lorry crashpublished at 07:23 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    West Yorkshire Police say they will be in contact with motorists seen using their mobile phones to take photographs and videos of a lorry which crashed onto an embankment where the A1(M) meets the A64.

    On Twitter, the force say it has noted the registration numbers of drivers seen using their phones at the wheel, following the accident near Bramham Crossroads.

    They add: "We will be in contact."

    Charities in West Yorkshire say they've helped hundreds of families struggling to afford children's school uniforms ahead of the new term.

    They depend on donations of old school uniform, which they then pass on to parents free of charge.

    Deborah Pearson helps run a scheme at the YMCA in Halifax, she said: "It helps to clothe families who might not be able to afford to buy new uniform."

  18. Lorry crashes on A1(M) embankment closing two lanespublished at 07:02 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    A lorry has crashed onto an embankment where the A1(M) meets the A64, with two lanes closed while emergency services try to recover it.

    Police and fire fighters are in attendance after the lorry left the road near Bramham Crossroads, near Tadcaster.

  19. Extra police patrols in Doncaster to help fight Spicepublished at 06:49 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    There will be more police on the streets of Doncaster to help deal with the impact of the drug Spice, after the council agreed to provide extra funding.

    Doncaster Council is paying for additional officers so there'll be joint patrols of police and council officers on duty seven days a week from 07:00 to 22:00.

    Officers will tackle anti-social behaviour, target aggressive begging, drug dealing and drug use, including the synthetic substance.

    It comes after discussions between the council and police amidst fears Spice is damaging local businesses and putting people off visiting the town.

  20. Police name man killed in road accidentpublished at 06:31 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    Police have named a man who died in a road traffic collision in West Yorkshire last week.

    Ian Jackson, 47, from Batley, died following the collision on the A62 Leeds road on 24 August.

    The incident happened after a red and white Honda CBR motorbike, which Mr Jackson was riding, was involved in a collision with the offside of a Range Rover as it was passing.

    It was then involved in a second collision with a black Peugeot 206, travelling on the opposite carriageway.

    Sergeant Ann Drury, of the Major Collision and Enquiry Team, said: “This was clearly a very sad and serious incident in which a man has lost his life.

    “We are continuing to investigate the circumstances and would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in contact with police."
