The safety barriers between Welton and Daltry Street (pictured) need to be replaced and Highways England is looking at taking down the lighting so that the central reservation can be wider.

Highways England say they will consider "whether to install lights on the verge" but if having no lights doesn't "have a detrimental impact on safety" then they wont replace them.

They add that they're "working closely with the local authority, police and residents throughout the development of the scheme.”

There's a big bend that goes under the bridge and it's a 70mph road and... if you're not used to that it can be quite daunting, and the other issue for me is it goes under the Humber Bridge and we need as light around those access roads."

Peterborough City Council had begun using the town's Travelodge to accommodate families with problems, resulting in a number of call-outs for police.

The impact on policing in Doncaster was so great that senior officers intervened and those involved have been moved back to Peterborough.

South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings branded the situation as "scandalous" and Peterborough City Council has accepted it should have worked more closely with Doncaster Council.

Ashley Cole, 56, had been on trial at Carlisle Crown Court. He admitted causing the death of Jamie Armstrong by careless driving, in darkness on the trans-Pennine route, on 8 September 2016. But Cole denied causing death by dangerous driving.

But today, after a week-long trial, he was found guilty by a jury of the more serious offence.

Jurors had heard Mr Armstrong, 30, died from “catastrophic” head injuries when his eastbound Audi A4 was in collision with the trailer of Cole’s lorry in darkness at 05:20. Mr Armstrong, from Haltwhistle, was travelling to work in the North East, having left accommodation in Gretna that morning.

Immediately before the crash occurred, Cole’s 40ft trailer laden with furniture was entirely across the eastbound carriageway. It had been stationary for 15 seconds after he left Stainmore Cafe and waited in the central reservation to turn west.

Cole, a man of previous good character, a father of two, and a lorry driver for more than two decades, was sentenced this afternoon by Judge Barbara Forrester.

As well as the two-year jail sentence, Cole, of Ecclesfield, Sheffield, must also serve a two-year driving ban when he's released, and take an extended re-test.
