The Government says they are committed to supporting the biofuels industry and to reducing carbon emissions from transport to tackle climate change.

    Quote Message

It's come as a nasty shock. We expected they were closing down for maintenance. We've all this wheat we've got to look at where this is going to go now we've lost one of our main markets. I suspect in the short term there's going to be a shock reaction to it and prices might fall accordingly."

    Keith Wells, Farmer, Driffield

    Quote Message

Like farmers across Yorkshire we can't stop feeding our cows protein, we have to get it from somewhere else. I try and supplement it through my own home grown feeds but the reality is I'm going to have to source this from elsewhere. There are other providers across the UK and overseas but of course bringing extra food from outside the area to here is going to cost me more."

Professor Mark Wilcox, from the University of Leeds, says research shows the machines spread more germs than disposable paper towels.

He says the problem lies in people not washing their hands properly, meaning microbes get blown off by jet air dryers and are then spread around the room.

The professor's study found contamination was "significantly higher" in toilets on the days jet air dryers were in use.

Professor Wilcox said: "The dryer creates an aerosol that contaminates the toilet room, the sinks, floor and other surfaces, but towels absorb the water and microbes left on the hands."

In Leeds, Staphylococcus Aureus bacteria, which are responsible for conditions ranging from minor skin and wound infections to life-threatening septicaemia, were found three times more often on the surface of the jet air dryers, compared with the paper towel dispensers.

The study is the largest of its type to investigate whether the way people dry their hands has an impact on the spread of bacteria.

  18. Shop cordoned off after reports of 'explosion’published at 10:08 British Summer Time 7 September 2018

    Paul Murphy
    Journalist, BBC Look North

This is McColl's newsagents in Market Weighton, a well-known shop on the High Street which is currently cordoned off by police after an incident in the early hours:

    The scene in Market Weighton

There were reports from local residents of an explosion at the site at about 04:00 - as well as claims an angle grinder had been used on the cash machine.

This morning, a couple of police cars and a scenes of crime van remain at the scene, with various officers in white paper suits going in and out of the newsagents conducting their investigations.

The cash machine itself seems to have been quite badly damaged, although it's still intact.

It remains in the shop, so I'm not entirely sure if the thieves got away with any money, but they have caused damage to the ATM.

There's a fair bit of traffic disruption here this morning and the police investigation is obviously continuing.

Jake Levene, 22, Mandy Christopher Lowther, 21, and Lee Childs, 45 (pictured left to right), all from West Yorkshire, supplied Fentanyl around the world via a site on the "dark web".

The National Crime Agency (NCA) said the painkiller was 100 times more potent than morphine.

It's been linked to more than 125 deaths in the UK since 2016, with 71 in Yorkshire alone.

Between December 2016 and April 2017, their business turned over £163,000 in cash, the NCA said.

The trio manufactured the drug in a warehouse in Morley, before posting it from a local post office.
