  1. Giant humanoids to land in Leeds for Light Nightpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 5 September 2018

    Giant "luminous humanoids" will land in Leeds city centre for this year's Light Night, it's been revealed.

    The installation, called Fantastic Planet, will be on display at Sidney Street, Victoria Gate and the top end of Briggate next month.

    They are the work of Australian artist Amanda Parer, with the creatures designed to look like travellers from an alien world exploring the city for the first time.

    More than 60 light artworks will pop up around the city for this year's Light Night which is due to run between 4 and 5 October.

    People are slowly having water restored to their homes after a burst water main tore through Mytholmroyd's main road this morning.

    Yorkshire Water says they've been moving water around their pipe network and that water supplies are currently being restored.

    The company thanked people living in the town "for their patience" and told their customers not to worry if their water is cloudy.

    The company has also been delivering bottled water to vulnerable customers as well as handing out free bottles at Grange Dean Medical Centre.

    Two men on trial for allegedly plotting a terror attack were attempting to manufacture a remotely-controlled explosive device in a laboratory above a fish and chip shop, a court has heard.

    Farhad Salah, 23 of Brunswick Road in Sheffield and Andy Star, 32 of the Mermaid Fish Bar in Sheffield Road in Chesterfield, were hoping to harm "infidels" using the weapon.

    Prosecutors said the device could be placed inside a car, and the jury heard that the men had been told the vehicle could be controlled through a laptop, meaning that no-one would need to be inside it.

    Describing the two defendants as supporters of Islamic State, prosecutor Anne Whyte QC said their intentions were "sophisticated" and "lethal"

    The trial is expected to last four weeks.

    Two people from Halifax have been arrested on suspicion of being members of the banned group, National Action.

    A total of five people have been arrested across the country, including the 23-year-old man and 22-year-old woman from West Yorkshire.

    National Action became the first extreme far-right group to be banned in the UK after it praised the murder of local MP Jo Cox.

    York City say they're "surprised and disappointed" that they've been given "little notice" of a public consultation event that will take place later this month about the redevelopment of Bootham Crescent.

    Persimmon Homes will hold an event for residents at St Luke's Parish Church on Burton Stone Lane on 20 September.

    The company has an option to buy the ground once the club has relocated to Monks Cross next year.

    City's stadium development director Ian McAndrews said in a lengthy statement on the club's website that the future use and redevelopment of the team's current home remains "very important" to them.

    He also believes supporters should be given an opportunity to comment on the proposals, not just residents.

    Parents at 20 Sheffield schools could be fined for leaving their car engines idling from today.

    Signs have gone up across the city warning drivers of fixed penalty notices being handed out.

    Drivers will first be warned before then being issued with a £20 fine.

    The idea is to cut pollution outside schools, according to councillors.

    Bottled water has arrived in Mytholmroyd after a water main burst earlier.

    Yorkshire Water say they're dealing with the burst, which left a large crater in the middle of Burnley Road and forced Calder High School, the library and local shops to shut.

    There's major disruption in the town as engineers work to stop the leak.

    Do not travel unless it's absolutely necessary, is the message from Calderdale Council after a burst water main in Mytholmroyd.

    Engineers have been working to stop the leak, but it's created a large crater in the road, closing part of the town.

    The council says commuters should look at alternative ways to travel with diversions in place.

    Plans for more than 50 new homes off Calvert Lane in Hull go before councillors today.

    The developers R&M Real Estates previously made an application for more than 80 houses on the site, which was rejected in 2016.

    The new proposal is also recommended for refusal with a number of concerns regarding potential flood risk for existing homes, access for the disabled and loss of green space.

    More than 100 people from across the country viewed the old Chapeltown railway station, that was built back in 1854.

    Complete with ticket office, waiting rooms and even platform, the railway station was expected to make £250,000.

    The death of a man who was found in the Victoria Quays area of Sheffield is still being treated as unexplained, police say.

    The man, who was in his 40s, was found at about 12:20 on Tuesday.

    A post-mortem examination will be carried out in the next few days, South Yorkshire Police confirmed.

    Neil Smith, 55, was last seen at about 11:00 on Monday in the Leeds Road area of Dewsbury.

    He is 6ft tall, of large build, with a bald head. He was last seen wearing shorts and a t-shIrt.

    It's thought he may have travelled to the Penrith area in a black BMW 1 Series car with the registration number PN12 CRU.

    Officers say they are "very concerned" for Neil’s welfare and are appealing to anyone who may have seen Neil, or knows where he is now, to contact them.

    A woman was threatened and spat at by three youths on bikes in Hull, according to Humberside Police.

    It happened as the woman cycled along Sherburn Street, off Holderness, Road at about 19:00 last night.

    One of the teenagers was reported to be carrying a "bladed weapon", officers said.

    Police are looking for three teenagers who were riding bikes.

    A woman from Sheffield has been left with serious leg injuries after being hit by a mobility scooter while at the Crystal Peaks shopping centre.

    Barbara Platts, 85, is used to being active, regularly going for walks in the Peak District and joining Pilates classes.

    But since she was knocked down 10 days ago, she says she's been housebound and has been back to hospital four times.

    "I was cross about it. All I could think about was, 'What if that was a child?' I dread to think what would have happened."

    Crystal Peaks says it will review whether more signs about scooters need to be put up at the shopping centre.

    Police in Sheffield are warning people not to to approach this man if they see him, but instead to call officers as they investigate the murder of Kavan Brissett:

    Mr Brissett, 21, was stabbed once in the chest last month near Langsett Walk. He died in hospital four days later.

    South Yorkshire Police say they want to speak Ahmed Farrah, 29, who is also known as Reggie, as they investigate his murder.

    So far they've not been able to find him but officers say he is known to frequent the Broomhall area.

    Amateur baker Luke Thompson, from Sheffield, has become the second contestant to leave the tent on the latest series of The Great British Bake Off.

    The 30-year-old civil servant from Mosborough, who moonlights as a House and Techno DJ, came unstuck during the show's "cake week" with judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.

    Speaking after his exit, Luke said: "Even though it was just two weeks, it was an amazing two weeks. I was absolutely devastated to leave, there is no getting away from that.

    "But on reflection now, it was one of the best experiences of my life. I have made 11 new friends for life as well."

  19. Warning over East Yorkshire carbon monoxide deathspublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 5 September 2018

    Thirteen people in East Yorkshire died from carbon monoxide poisoning last year, according to new figures from local NHS trusts.

    That number, which marks a small increase from the nine deaths last year, has prompted a warning from Humberside Fire and Rescue to check gas hobs, open fires and boilers.

    The risk is high because you can't see, smell or taste carbon monoxide, and the only way to detect it is with an alarm, the fire service says.
