  1. Mayor to go head-to-head in boxing ring with councillor?published at 09:39 British Summer Time 6 September 2018

A parish councillor has challenged Sheffield's Lord Mayor to a fight during a town hall meeting, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Magid Magid

David Ogle, an independent councillor on High Green parish council, said he wanted to go three rounds in a boxing ring with Lord Mayor Magid Magid - and even offered to "go easy on him".

However, things are not quite as feisty as they may seem...

Councillor Ogle is trying to get Sheffield Council's support for a community boxing gym at High Green and he invited the Lord Mayor to visit the area and help set it up.

Mr Ogle told a full meeting of the council: "These type of gyms have been shown to reduce crime and improve quality of life for people.

"I'm asking the Lord Mayor to come to High Green and do a three-round boxing match with me in the spirit of sportsmanship.

"I'm an independent on the parish council so there are quite a few people at the Town Hall who would like to see me get a good slap, so you would be doing them a favour," he added.

The Lord Mayor, who chaired the meeting wearing a large straw hat, smiled throughout Mr Ogle's request, but declined to comment and said he would e-mail Councillor Ogle privately.

The aim is to help tackle the drop in hedgehog numbers in the UK, which have gone down by 50% since the year 2000.

It's claimed to be the first campaign of its kind on a university campus and aims to teach staff, students and the surrounding community about friendly behaviour towards these spiny mammals.

Students and staff are also being invited to take part in a hedgehog night safari, where they'll explore Sheffield's wild side after dark and learn how to survey for hedgehogs in and around Weston Park.

The university's also put a film together showing students the animals which have been spotted on campus.

Stephen Port is now serving life in prison for the death in 2015 of Anthony Walgate (pictured), 23, and three other young men.

They were murdered by being given overdoses of the date rape drug GHB after meeting Port online and visiting his flat.

Police had ignored a series of chances to catch Port, leaving him free to continue killing.

The deaths were not treated as murders until weeks after the final killing, despite concerns being raised by the families and friends of the victims.
