  8. Fewer takeaways for Barnsley town centre?published at 11:30 British Summer Time 5 September 2018

A new "Local Plan" to cover developments in the borough into the 2030s could see rules change in how takeaways are given planning permission, councillors say.

Restrictions were introduced in 2012, but they are limited to ensure only that full rows of shops are not taken over by outlets operating side by side.

Councillor Chris Lamb said he recently objected to a planning application in the town for a takeaway because the number of hot food takeaways within a confined area was damaging

He says: "If you look at the hours of opening, 4pm to 11pm, why are people going to come into the town centre during the day, when nothing is open?

"The more of these facilities you put in the town centre, the more you kill it."

  10. City's new station facilities 'dirty and smelly' - Hull MPpublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 5 September 2018

Empty shops, smelly toilets and a dirty waiting room at Hull's railway station are giving visitors to the city a poor first impression, an MP has said.

    Hull Paragon Station

Last year TransPennine Express spent £1.4m on improving Hull Paragon station, including building new toilets and a waiting room.

But Diana Johnson, the Labour MP for Hull North, says they are poorly maintained and several of the new retail units which were built are lying empty.

She said: "The toilets have not been kept clean and they smell, and it's not very nice sitting in that waiting room. I don't actually think these improvements have delivered much for the station."

    Quote Message

We know the toilet facilities remain an issue. These facilities are open to all members of the public, not just our station customers. As a result, we do experience some anti-social behaviour within the toilets and station. This is something we will continue to work with British Transport Police and Hull City Council to tackle.''
