    Plans for a £130m transformation of the Albion Square site in Hull have been submitted.

    The council proposals include a new ice arena, more than 250 homes, 10 shops, two offices and more than 600 parking spaces.

    It's hoped the project, when finished, will create more than 500 full-time jobs.

    The complexities of keeping the Three Ships mural on the former BHS building are still being investigated.

    Bradford Council is today expected to agree a plan to cope better with harsh winters after overspending by £520,000 in the city last winter.

    Heavy snow during a cold spell nicknamed the Beast from the East, carried freezing winds across the continent, and temperatures fell to lows as -30C (-22F).

    The overspend was revealed as part of a report discussing how the council is preparing for winter.

    Bradford's gritting was "the highest level of precautionary treatment in West Yorkshire", the report said.

    The report also reveals 19,000 tonnes of salt was spread across the district's roads last winter.

    The previous winter saw only 6,900 tonnes of salt used.

    The council is planning to use trained drivers from other departments this coming winter, as well as the existing gritting team.

    Other changes proposed include using risk assessments to establish which routes should be included in the priority gritting lists, and better training for staff.

    There's been another drop in unemployment in Yorkshire.

    Latest figures show the number of people in the region without a job fell by 2,000 between May and July to 118,000.

    Nationally unemployment is down by 55,000 and now stands at 1.36 million.

    A total of 7,000 loneliness toolkits are being posted through letterboxes at Firth Park in Sheffield.

    Each envelope contains information about local activities and facilities, to encourage people in the community to meet up.

    Run by Age Better Sheffield, it's hoped the kits will give lonely people the confidence to speak to other people.

  6. Wakefield passenger dies after car hits tractor and wallpublished at 09:14 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    A car passenger in Wakefield has been killed after the car they were in collided with two other vehicles including a tractor.

    It happened at about 21:15 on Sunday on Batley Road in Kirkhamgate and involved three vehicles, according to police.

    A silver Volkswagen Golf was travelling towards Batley when it hit a second Volkswagen Golf parked at the side of the road.

    Officers say the force of the collision caused the first Golf to cross over to the opposite side of the road and hit an oncoming Massey Ferguson tractor, before colliding with a wall.

    The front seat passenger of the VW Golf suffered fatal injuries in the collision.

    The driver of the vehicle was seriously injured and is currently in a critical condition in hospital.

    Anyone who witnessed the collision or who saw the vehicles involved is asked to contact police.

    Hull City Council has taken the unusual decision to pay a writer to create a new play.

    The local authority has commissioned John Godber, to write Long Live the Kings of Hull for Hull New Theatre.

    It's a sequel to last year's hit The Kings of Hull, external, which told the story of three generations of the King family in the city.

  8. Managed red light zone talks after protestspublished at 08:45 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    A managed red light zone in Leeds is to be discussed at a community meeting later, after people living in the Holbeck area say they're still worried by the zone.

    It's intended to make life safer for sex workers, but there are continuing calls for it to be scrapped.

    Residents have said they will protest every two weeks until the sex trade is moved.

    They say they've been plagued by anti-social behaviour since the zone was set up.

    About 30 people took to the roadside on Tuesday to protest about the use of the area by people in the sex trade.

    In a statement, Leeds City Council said: "Residents, businesses and all interested parties can be fully assured the work undertaken as part of the managed approach is under continuous review."

    A debate will take place in Westminster today about the summer of disruption on rail services through Yorkshire.

    It will be led by the Conservative Thirsk and Malton MP, Kevin Hollinrake, who called on Transport Secretary Chris Grayling to intervene, following major delays to train services running through his constituency.

    Weeks of delays and cancellations were caused on services through York and towards Scarborough.

    An apology from Mr Grayling to rail commuters was broadcast during the BBC's Inside Out programme, broadcast live from the National Railway Museum in York last night.

    Hull is home to the annual British Science Festival this week.

    The four-day event starts today and will see performances, exhibitions and artwork displayed around the city.

    The University of Hull will have a number of exhibits including a giant sea turtle made from plastic waste to highlight the impact of humans on marine life.

    A six year old boy from Yorkshire, who was stuck in Belgium because of a passport mix-up, has had an emotional reunion with his mum, as he arrived back in the UK.

    Mohamed Bangoura, from Sheffield, was travelling home with a family friend on 2 September when his passport was rejected by Belgian authorities and he was denied permission to board a flight home.

    The Home Office said the passport had been revoked as it was not valid.

    Mohamed was met by his mother, Hawa Keita, and other family members at Manchester Airport last night on an emergency passport, following calls for him to be allowed to return home.

    Barclays is closing its Filey branch in North Yorkshire in December - the bank says customers are switching to online banking.

    Almost a dozen branches of various banks are closing in the county this year.

    Millions of pounds could be spent on a new traffic light system to help unclog congested roads in West Yorkshire.

    The £7.5m system would see the 1,600 sets of traffic lights in West Yorkshire fully connected for the first time.

    At the moment there are four separate control rooms across the county, but the new plan would see all of them combined and updated with new technology, in an attempt to make traffic run faster.

    It's claimed it could reduce journey times on some of the busiest roads by more than 10%.

    An 18-year-old student died suddenly just four days after moving to university, an inquest has heard.

    Abigail Hall, from Balby in Doncaster, had been vomiting and suffering from stomach pains before she collapsed in September 2015, the coroner was told.

    Despite asking staff at her student halls at Sheffield Hallam University to call a doctor, she was told it was not possible.

    Ms Hall was found unconscious in her bathroom by a flatmate two days later.

    The court heard a post-mortem examination found she died of aspiration pneumonitis, caused when foreign bodies enter the lungs.

    The inquest continues.

  18. Mandatory child abuse reporting after Ampleforth cover-uppublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    The government is being urged to make reporting child abuse mandatory after a major cover-up at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire.

    The call in the House of Lords came after a report found monks at Ampleforth near Helmsley hid allegations of "appalling sexual abuse" against pupils as young as seven to protect the church's reputation.

    The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse also said the abuse spanning four decades was likely to be "considerably" more widespread than previously thought.

    Allegations stretching back to the 1960s encompassed "a wide spectrum of physical abuse, much of which had sadistic and sexual overtones", according to the report.

    Ten individuals linked to the schools, mainly monks, have been cautioned or convicted over sexual activity or pornography offences involving a "large number of children."
