    Armed police arrested a newspaper publisher on his way to work in connection with suspected hate crimes against his local MP, the publisher has said.

    Danny Lockwood, of the The Press based in Batley, said four police cars pulled him over on the A64 in West Yorkshire.

    The former rugby league player said his arrest came despite MP Paula Sherriff's staff telling police he had not committed the crimes at her office.

    West Yorkshire Police refused to confirm or deny his arrest.

    A main Doncaster road is closed tonight as workers carry out urgent repairs.

    The A630 Frenchgate Tunnel will be closed from 20:00 on Tuesday evening until 06:00 Wednesday.

    Doncaster Council say diversions will be in place as the work is carried out.

    The Canal and Rivers Trust is looking for volunteers to help with lock painting, vegetation clearance, litter picking and graffiti removal.

    Called the Saltaire Towpath Taskforce, external, the idea is you all meet up on the first Friday of every month, all tools are provided all you need are sensible shoes and yourself!

    Becca Dent from the Canal and Rivers Trust said: "The efforts of our dedicated volunteers will bring real benefits to everyone who lives nearby or visits the area."

    It happened on Idle Road this afternoon and police have had to close the road while the VW is recovered.

  5. School closed after fight but 'all pupils safe'published at 15:04 British Summer Time 25 September 2018

    A school in Sheffield has closed after a fight outside the gates between students this afternoon.

    Police were called to the fight at Fir Vale School on Owler Lane at about 12:55.

    Writing on Facebook, the school says all students are safe and that they closed at 14:00, with pupils being supervised in the library until they can be collected.

    Yorkshire Ambulance Service says two people were treated shortly after the fight with minor injuries.

    A 21-year-old man has been arrested by police after a man was fatally stabbed outside a cinema in Sheffield.

    Fahim Hersi, aged 22, from the Broomhall area died in hospital after the assault outside Cineworld at about 21.20 on Friday.

    The 21-year-old, from Sheffield, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

    So far eight arrests have been made in connection with Mr Hersi’s death.

    A person has been injured in a crash involving a police car in Cleethorpes according to Humberside Police.

    They say officers were following a vehicle which had driven off at speed when asked to stop on Harold Street this afternoon.

    While the police car was following, it was involved in a crash with another vehicle on Barcroft Street.

    The driver of the vehicle and two police officers suffered minor injuries.

    Officers say the offending vehicles fled the scene.

    Several roads in the area have been cordoned off as investigations continue.

    A fight between students at a Sheffield school has prompted a major police response, with police dog units being sent to the scene.

    Officers were called at about 12:55 this afternoon to Fir Vale School on Owler Lane after reports of students fighting outside the school gates.

    Yorkshire Ambulance Service says two patients were treated at the scene with minor injuries.

    Police say they remain at the scene liaising with the school.

    A 13-year-old girl is thought to have been stalked and sexually assaulted by a man in Leeds, police say.

    The attack reportedly happened at about 15:00 on Wednesday 19 September in Yeadon as the victim was walking home from school.

    She was followed by the man, thought to be in his 30s, when she ran into a ginnel that runs between Greenlea Fold and Greenlea Close.

    She is then said to have been sexually attacked.

    The man is described as white and of skinny build wearing black clothing, including a black tracksuit top with the hood up.

    He had brown unkempt hair and was clean shaven, with what appeared to be shaving cuts on his face. He spoke with a local accent.

    Police are appealing for information, including local CCTV.

    Fire crews are struggling to get up and down some roads in Sheffield because of bad parking, firefighters say.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue says cars parking on both sides of some streets means their fire engine can't get through, potentially stopping them getting to life-threatening emergencies.

    The above images, from firefighters at Rivelin fire station, show double parking on some Sheffield streets is causing them "a real headache".

    They ask motorists to think about where to park their vehicles to ensure emergency vehicles can get through.

    Card Factory, based in West Yorkshire, is warning that challenging conditions on the high street are continuing to drag on profits.

    The retailer, which has its headquarters in Wakefield, saw its profits drop 14%.

    Retailers have taken a hit in recent months, not only due to the cold snap brought in by the Beast from the East in the early spring, but the heatwave that kept shoppers away from the high street during the summer.

    A 13-year-old boy, who was struck by a car after getting off a bus last week, has died.

    Thomas Easton died in the early hours of this morning, police said.

    He had been in a critical condition following a collision with a Nissan Navara pick-up truck in Wide Lane, Morley, shortly before 14:00 on Wednesday, September 19.

    Initial enquires showed he had just got off a single-decker Volvo bus and was crossing the road when the collision occurred.

    Masked burglars broke into a house in the Masham area and stole valuables and guns, say North Yorkshire Police.

    Officers say two men wearing balaclavas broke into the house on the evening of Wednesday 19 September.

    The thieves took two licensed shotguns and a rifle, as well as several silver ornaments.

    The force says its officers are supporting the owners of the house.

    A wallaby that had been on the run from a wildlife park in Filey for five weeks has been found dead.

    Drones and thermal imaging cameras had been used in the hunt for Houdini, who went missing from the Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park in August.

    The owners of the park say he was found dead by the side of the road between Cayton and Eastfield this morning.

    They believe he was hit by a car.

    Needless to say we are all devastated at the park and this is the worst possible outcome. He has been on the loose for 5 weeks and stayed within 5 miles of the park. This was not the ending to his story that we wanted, and until this morning we were still hopeful to recapture him."

    A group of New Age travellers has been taken to a court by a council wanting to redevelop the land they live on.

    Twenty-nine people living below the former Sheffield Ski Village, on Vale Road, were issued with an eviction notice in January.

    Their eviction hearing started at Sheffield Civil Court on Monday.

    Sheffield Ski Village opened in the 1990s but has been derelict since a fire in 2012.

    The travellers have lived there for more than 10 years.
