    Campaigners trying to block a new road scheme from the M1 into Barnsley will meet with councillors today.

    It would mean a new one-way gyratory being built on part of Penny Pie Park.

    A former soldier from West Yorkshire has completed a fundraising walk of 100 miles across 10 different RAF stations to raise cash for forces charities, after being backed by comedian Jason Manford.

    Jeffrey Long, 86, began at Catterick and RAF Leeming on 16 September, and finished on Tuesday at RAF Odiham.

    The ex-paratrooper raised £120,000 after his fundraising was boosted by a viral tweet from Manford last year.

    The RAF benevolent fund and Support Our Paras will benefit from the walk.

    Mr Long, from Bingley, began fundraising 11 years ago when he walked 650 miles from London to Lausanne in Switzerland.

    Since then he has completed Liverpool to Leeds, Hadrian's Wall and the Three Peaks Challenge.

  4. New Hockney work to be revealed at Westminster Abbeypublished at 07:30 British Summer Time 26 September 2018

    A new stained glass window at Westminster Abbey, designed by the Bradford-born artist David Hockney, will be revealed later.

    The 20ft (6.1m) x 6ft (1.8m) window in the abbey's north transept will be known as The Queen's Window.

    It was commissioned by the Dean & Chapter of Westminster to celebrate the Queen's reign.

    The cost of the window is being covered by two anonymous benefactors.

    It's Hockney's first work in stained glass and his design was turned into reality by York's Barley Studio.

    There's a threat of indefinite strike action by dinner staff at a school in Barnsley.

    Nine members of staff face redundancy at Ladywood Primary in Grimethorpe.

    There's another day of action today, the sixth this term, and the indefinite strike could begin next Thursday unless there's a breakthrough.

    The school says it's facing tough financial times and it regrets having to make the cuts.

    South Yorkshire Police are increasing patrols around a school in Sheffield.

    It follows a fight between students.

    More than 15 police vehicles, dog teams and a police helicopter were sent to Fir Vale School yesterday lunchtime.

    Officers confirmed one student was injured in the fight.

    They say increasing patrols will help to provide reassurance to the community.

    A 15-year-old girl missing from Doncaster since Saturday is believed to be in the York area, according to police.

    Courtney Booth is thought to have travelled to Harrogate with a man in his 20s.

    She is believed to have then moved on to the York area.

    Courtney is described as white and has light brown/ginger shoulder-length hair.

    She was last seen wearing black Nike trainers and dark skinny jeans.

    Police say they are concerned for Courtney’s welfare.

    Officers are urging anyone who may have seen her in the York area to contact them.

    Almost a third of rubbish people in Leeds throw away into their bin - the one destined for landfill - could be recycled, external.

    The city council claims that the average bin in Leeds is loaded with things that could be reused and says it wants to bring attention to those items that can lead another life.

    The authority says the equivalent weight of over 25 double decker buses of recycling waste is collected in the city each day.

    The wrongly disposed of items include include mixed paper and card, food tins and drinks, aluminum foil, any plastics with the number 1, 2 or 4 in the triangle symbol on the packaging as well as plastic bottles and bags.

    Stained glass has been taken out of a window at Beverley Minster, as part of major restoration work.

    The damaged windows have been taken away by experts to be repaired and will be returned to the Minster in a few months time.

    The stained glass from the west window has been sandwiched between modern glass panels to protect it from the elements.

    Specialist glazier Nick Teed said: "This window is in really serious need of a major overhaul in terms of getting it conserved and then protected from environmental damage."

    A 25-year-old man needed stiches after being punched in the face outside Revolution De Cuba on Parliament Street in the early hours of Sunday 29 April, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    Officers say he was attacked after trying to help a woman who had been pushed over.

    They say the believe the man pictured could help them with their investigation.

    More houses are being planned for Mirfield and residents have expressed their concern, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    People living near Granny Lane have been sent a letter telling them they can have their say over proposals to build 65 homes on land close to Grade II listed Sheep Ings Farm.

    The 2.23 hectare (5.5 acres) site is earmarked for housing by Edinburgh-based Miller Homes, which plans to build a range of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes.

    The proposal has already received objections from people living nearby, with several highlighting the area's susceptibility to flooding and former mining works as causes for concern.

    A spokesperson for Miller Homes said: "We are keen to engage with the local community and we have issued information to people and invite their feedback."
