    Rotherham is welcoming students for the first day of term at the new University Centre.

    The new £10.5m university on Doncaster Gate will provide access to degrees and higher-level qualifications.

    The degrees will be accredited by Sheffield Hallam University and University of Hull.

    A man was attacked and robbed by four teenagers in Hull, say Humberside Police.

    Officers say the teenage boys assaulted the man on Perran Close in Bransholme at around 23:00 on Saturday, before stealing cash from him.

    Police want anyone who saw what happened to come forward.

    Leeds Kirkgate Market will hold a three-day festival it has been announced.

    Dubbed KMFest, it will take place between Thursday and Saturday this week and will include food demonstrations, special discounts and live music.

    You'll also be able to speak to the designers, artists and makers who are selling their wares there.

    Cllr Asghar Khan from Leeds City Council said “ Kirkgate Market is such a fantastic landmark in our city and so it’s great to celebrate it and all the market traders within it."

    A teenager has been left with a serious head injury after being hit by a car in Hull.

    The 18-year-old was riding a bike on Hedon Road, between King George Dock and Marfleet Lane, at about 22:00 on Saturday when he was struck by a car.

    Police are appealing for witnesses.

    Women using unregulated websites to find a sperm donor have been harassed and sent photos of miscarriages, the BBC has found.

    There are strict criteria for NHS artificial insemination and many women say private treatment is too expensive, so they turn to the internet.

    "Sarah", 26, from Yorkshire, is single and said she wanted a baby without a partner.

    She told BBC Inside Out the cost of private treatment was too high and going online meant the treatment was free, although she did experience problems.

    Rotherham Council is back in control of running its services for the first time in three- and-a-half years.

    It's been under government control since February 2015, after a report revealed, external 1,400 girls had been abused in the town.

    The report highlighted a number of concerns about the council and the government appointed six commissioners, paid up to £800 a day, to run services.

    The final three remaining commissioners are being withdrawn today.

    The council has now been judged to have improved enough to run itself.

    Firefighters have been dealing with a large blaze at a waste business in Hull.

    Crews from three stations were called to tackle the blaze in the Clough Road area overnight.

    The Environment Agency say its officers are on site this morning.

    The cause of the fire is not known.

    Police have named a man fatally stabbed at a Sheffield cinema on Friday.

    22-year-old Fahim Hersi, from the Broomhall area, was outside the cinema at Valley Centertainment when he was assaulted at around 21:20 on Friday.

    He died later in hospital.

    Mr Hersi died as a result of a single stab wound to the chest, officers said.

    Seven people were arrested immediately after the incident on suspicion of murder.

    A 21-year-old Sheffield man remains in police custody.

    Two men and a woman, all from the Sheffield area, have been released under investigation.

    Three men have been released with no further action.

  13. Former bank could become youth accommodationpublished at 09:13 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    A decision on plans to turn a former bank in Withernsea into accommodation for young people brought up in care will be considered today.

    The plans to convert the former Natwest building into eight supervised flats for 16 to 21-year-olds are recommended for approval.

    There have been several objections to the proposals, including from Humberside Police, who have raised concerns about crime levels in the area.

    The force is worried young people in the flats could come into contact with drug dealers.

    Withernsea Town Council has also objected to the plans.

    The developer behind the project has declined to comment.

    The East Riding of Yorkshire Council will consider the application this afternoon.

  15. Compensation for delayed Northern passengers in Yorkshirepublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    Northern says rail passengers in Yorkshire who were badly affected by cancellations and delays this summer will be eligible for compensation.

    Money-back was only being offered to season ticket holders, but now anyone who was affected by the cancellations can make a claim.

    Northern services across Yorkshire were hit when new timetables were introduced in May.

    The scheme is expected to open on 9 October and people have eight weeks to make a claim.

    Last week, a review by the Office of Rail and Road blamed a lack of "responsibility and accountability" for the severe disruption, which saw Northern cancel 168 trains, and said passengers were "badly treated".

    A man from Hull will be one of those to give evidence to the public inquiry into the contaminated blood scandal that left nearly 3,000 dead.

    The inquiry is looking at how thousands of NHS patients were given blood products infected with hepatitis and HIV during the 1970s and 1980s.

    Nick Sainsbury, from Hull, believes he contracted HIV and Hepatitis C after being given contaminated blood.

    He is travelling to London to submit a statement to the inquiry, but says it has come too late for many people.

    York City Knights are celebrating this morning after winning promotion.

    The city's Rugby League side beat Whitehaven yesterday at Bootham Crescent 32-14, to finish top the table and gain automatic promotion to rugby league's second tier.

    They finished two points above Bradford Bulls, the odds-on title favourites.

    The breakthrough comes as Knights prepare to move into York's new Community Stadium next season.
