Thousands have been cut down in the city since 2012, which has prompted a number of protests.

The protests stem from a dispute surrounding the 25-year, £2.2bn Streets Ahead contract between Sheffield City Council and Amey.

The contract has resulted in about 5,500 trees being cut down since 2012.

The authority, which is planting new trees after removing existing ones, insists trees earmarked for felling were diseased, dying, dangerous or damaging.

Protesters argue many of the felled trees were healthy.

Campaigners, the council and the contractor are due to speak later.

The talks will be conducted by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution.

They will be overseen by the Bishop of Sheffield, the Very Reverend Dr Pete Wilcox.
