    A nurse from York has decided to compete in a round the world yacht race, despite the fact she's never been sailing before.

    Eve Ashforth, 28, says she decided to sign up for the Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race to prove to herself she could achieve anything.

    Eve says: “Many of my friends ask me if I'm already a great sailor and when I explain I'm a complete newcomer they're somewhat shocked."

    During the last 40,000 mile challenge competitors encountered 14-metre high waves and hurricane force winds.

    Eve has to pass four levels of race training before lining up for the start.

    She's now completed two of the levels and says: “Considering I've never sailed before, level one was a huge shock - excuse the pun, but it was literally like being thrown in the deep end."

    An illuminated artwork celebrating two suffragettes is to be projected on to a building as part of a two-day arts festival in Leeds city centre.

    Leonora Cohen and Mary Gawthorpe both played a part in the suffrage struggle and came from Leeds.

    Leeds library is to have a large artwork called A Certain Amount of Courage projected on to its exterior.

    Leeds Light Night, the annual free arts and light festival, is to take place over the first weekend in October.

    A Sheffield man has been jailed for 16 months for causing a public nuisance during protests at a Lancashire fracking site.

    Simon Blevins, 26, was convicted of public nuisance by a jury at an earlier trial.

    He was sentenced to 16 months in prison alongside two other people at Preston Crown Court.

    Blevins was told by the judge that the protests "caused costs and disruption" to Cuadrilla "but their other victims were the many members of public who were nothing to do with Cuadrilla".

    The man who collapsed before a Barnsley game last week is sat up in his hospital bed and talking, his family has said.

    Stephen Croft, 61, was airlifted from Oakwell ahead of the Barnsley versus Burton Albion game on Saturday 22 September.

    His family has said that his condition has improved to a point where he can communicate.

    In a statement issued through the football club, the family has said they are grateful for the support they've received and want to thank both clubs and the emergency services for their help.

    The organiser of the Hull Marathon says he fears volunteers could be put off helping in the future.

    His concerns come after some were assaulted, spat at and sworn at during Sunday's race.

    Some drivers became frustrated and didn't observe the road closures.

    A man who crashed a decommissioned ambulance into a level crossing and abandoned the vehicle has been told he is facing a jail sentence.

    The ambulance hit a barrier near Kildwick, North Yorkshire, in July.

    Shane Hughes, 41, from Ramsgate Street, Halifax, appeared at Bradford Crown Court on a separate theft offence.

    A judge warned Hughes he faces jail for driving while disqualified, having no insurance and endangering the safety of persons on the railway and a theft.

    He will be sentenced on 16 November by Judge Jonathan Rose at Bradford Crown Court for all of those offences.

    The last of Hull's Headscarf Revolutionaries, who campaigned for better safety conditions on trawlers, is to be given the Freedom of the City.

    Yvonne Blenkinsop was recommended for the honour by the council at a meeting yesterday.

    Mrs Blenkinsop, along with Christine Jensen, Mary Denness and Lillian Bilocca, were known as the Headscarf Revolutionaries (mural in Hull pictured above).

    Their efforts helped force the government to introduce new safety measures at sea following disasters in 1968 which had led to the loss of 58 lives.

    Organisations across York are celebrating the centenary of the first women winning the right to vote, with the arrival of the Suffrage Flag in the city.

    The flag is visiing four different government buildings in the city on four separate days

    The aim of the Suffrage Flag Relay, which sees the flag travel to government departments across the UK, is to initiate discussions about social history.

    Today it's at the National Railway Museum.

    Jim Lowe, head of operations at the museum, said: “Women have always been vital to the success of the railways.

    "It's important to highlight the many opportunities available for women in today’s engineering industry and to celebrate the progress made in the last 100 years,” he added.

    The morale of GPs in the Wakefield area is "precarious," according to the man leading a review of how doctors are coping with workloads.

    Last year, the British Medical Association warned patient care across the UK was at risk due to a "chronic shortage" of new doctors replacing those who had reached retirement.

    Dr Greg Connor, who is examining the issue of workloads, said: "Overall, although morale is precarious in general practice in Wakefield, we've done a lot of work to innovate and to collaborate between surgeries."

    His comments come as 11 practices have been told by Wakefield's Clinical Commissioning Group to improve patient satisfaction levels.

    A David Hockney-designed stained glass window celebrating the Queen's reign has been revealed at Westminster Abbey.

    The Queen's Window is in the north transept and replaces one of the building's few remaining clear windows.

    Hockney, who was born in Bradford, created the design on his iPad.

    He said the hawthorn blossom scene is set in Yorkshire.

    Westminster Abbey said the result: "Reflects the Queen as a countrywoman and her widespread delight in, and yearning for, the countryside."

    Barley Studio in York created the 20ft (6.1m) x 6ft (1.8m) window using traditional techniques.

    Yorkshire celebrity TV chef James Martin has announced he's hitting the road for a 22-date theatre tour, starting next month.

    The chef, who quit presenting the BBC's Saturday Kitchen in 2016, will be doing live cooking performances across the country.

    He will be in York, Sheffield, Hull, Harrogate and Halifax for the tour.

    James said: "I can’t wait to get back on the road for this tour.

    "Last time around I was absolutely blown away by the reception.

    "It was really thrilling to be able interact more directly with an audience."

    A JCB vehicle worth £100,000 which police believe was stolen in Staffordshire has been found in Yorkshire., external

    The force says it's seized a total of £125,000 of stolen plant equipment in Barnsley after a tip-off.

    The JCB vehicle weighes 4.5 tonnes, is used to crush concrete and officers reckon it was taken from Keele University in May.

    A mural has been painted in Sheffield city centre - it's to celebrate a local culture magazine's 10th anniversary.

    It has been painted on Howard Street and is near the main building at Sheffield Hallam University.

    The multi-coloured mural is about three-storeys high.

    According to the Urban Dictionary, the phrase "now then" is a local phrase for "hello," deriving from Old Yorkshire dialect.

    Police in York say they've found a 47-year-old missing man they appealed for information about earlier.

    Officers were concerned for the welfare of Stuart Aiken, but say he has now been found and is receiving appropriate medical treatment.
