    A 16-year-old boy is continuing to be treated in hospital and is now in a stable condition after he was stabbed in the city yesterday afternoon, it's been confirmed.

    West Yorkshire Police say they've made no arrests yet over the attack at Lovell Park on North Street.

    The boy was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the stabbing which happened at about 14:00 on Thursday.

    Police say they're still looking for witnesses and if anyone has information they should contact them, external.

    A police officer has been injured while arresting a man who was seen with a "small axe" and acting in a "threatening" way in Beverley this morning.

    Officers, including dog handlers, were sent to the scene after they received a call at about 09:00 this morning, according to Humberside Police.

    A dog handler sustained minor injuries as a 47-year-old man was arrested on Butcher Row on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and assaulting a police officer.

    No one else was hurt in the "isolated incident" and police have thanked the public for contacting them quickly.

    A car is believed to have been deliberately set on fire in Harrogate town centre in the early hours of this morning.

    Police say it happened at about 00:30 on Stray Rein and involved a black Vauxhall Corsa being set alight.

    Harrogate fire crews who put the fire out say the blaze caused "total fire damage to the passenger compartment".

    Police want anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

  4. NHS waste backlog company 'vilified'published at 11:00 British Summer Time 12 October 2018

    The head of the firm at the centre of the NHS clinical waste scandal has hit back against claims of mismanagement.

    Earlier this month it emerged waste from hospitals had not been disposed of "in a timely fashion" by contractor Healthcare Environmental Services.

    One of the disposal sites is in Normanton in West Yorkshire.

    Garry Pettigrew, managing director of Healthcare Environmental Services, says his company had been "vilified for providing an excellent service."

    The firm has been stripped of NHS contracts after hundreds of tonnes of clinical waste piled up at its sites.

    In a statement last week the company said it had "never stockpiled hundreds of tonnes of human body parts and dangerous waste at any of our sites throughout the UK."

    It added the site in Normanton had reached its capacity for the amount of waste it had, and the company has been working hard to reduce the amount of waste there.

    A prison officer was attacked and found unconscious while at work at Lindholme prison near Doncaster overnight, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed

    The officer was discovered unconscious and was treated at the prison last night.

    He received hospital treatment this morning.

    The Ministry of Justice say workers met with the prison governor this morning about safety concerns and are now back at work.

    The tree has come down at Darton, meaning services between Barnsley and Wakefield Kirkgate are at a standstill.

    People who live on the Yorkshire coast are being warned to take care as winds could reach up to 55mph today.

    Staff at a South Yorkshire prison are refusing to work after a prison officer was “strangled unconscious” last night, the BBC understands.

    Officers arriving for day shifts at Lindholme Prison in Doncaster at 08:00 have held a meeting in the visits’ centre and have not taken up their posts.

    The BBC has contacted the Ministry of Justice for comment.

    A 36-year-old man from York is preparing to run what he says will be his last marathon, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

    Sean Coxhead will be supported along the route of the Yorkshire Marathon, external by friends from the community running group, Good Gym.

    When he entered the race his target was to beat last year's time, but in May he was diagnosed with incurable cancer.

    He says he plans to run as much as possible, but has a wheelchair on hand if he needs it to help get him to the finish line on Sunday.

    An army of fans will be waiting for him at the three-mile "cheer station."

    His supporters will then be bused to the 26-mile marker to see Sean cross the finish line.

    Businesses would welcome tolls being scrapped on the Humber Bridge, after it was claimed they could be abolished if Yorkshire got devolution.

    An estate agent, in Barton-upon-Humber, says a free crossing would have a significant impact for the local area.

    Steve Burell said: "It would certainly open up North Lincolnshire to East Yorkshire, it would open up the area to a new sector of people."

    Yesterday, Stewart Arnold, the leader of the Yorkshire Party, claimed if Yorkshire had similar political powers to Scotland or Wales, then charges may be removed.

    Broadcaster ITV is hoping for bumper crowds as its open auditions come to Leeds and Bradford this week.

    Production teams from the show will be at the Core Shopping Centre in Leeds on Saturday 13 October from 12:00 to 16:00.

    They'll also be at the Broadway Shopping Centre in Bradford on Sunday 14 October from 12:00 until 16:00.

    There are calls for Kinship Carers, people who bring up the children of a relative, to be given more support in West Yorkshire.

    There are about 200,000 children in kinship care nationally.

    A new survey for the charity Grandparents Plus, external says children being looked after by a relative or friend saves the government more than £2bn a year.

    The report also found many young people and their carers were struggling, because of a lack of emotional and financial support.

    Research indicates about half of children are in kinship care because of parents' drug or alcohol misuse.

    Other reasons include bereavement, imprisonment and abuse or neglect.

    The Anglican diocese of York say five of its churches have had lead stolen from their roofs in the last two months.

    The diocese covers the city of York, part of North Yorkshire and most of the East Riding of Yorkshire.

    It says churches in Sledmere, Drax, Skipwith, Cottingham and North Cave have been targeted in September and October.

    Church officials say criminals are encouraged by the high value of the metal.

    Humberside Police say they will support specialist investigators in finding out what caused a plane to crash in a field in East Yorkshire.

    The pilot and passenger on board the light aircraft both died when it came down close to Leven, near Beverley on Wednesday night.

    The aircraft was flying south from the Scottish Borders and crashed near to the approach to the landing strip at Beverley Airfield.

    Investigations are continuing this morning after a teenager was stabbed in a city centre park in Leeds.
