    Police have launched an investigation after an unexplained death in Cottingham.

    Humberside Police received a call just before midday to report the death of man at an address on Jipdane.

    Officers are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the man and say enquiries are in the "very early" stages.

    New flood defences in Skipton, which cost £17.8m, have officially opened today.

    The Environment Agency-led project will help to protect almost 380 homes and 165 businesses in the town centre from flooding from Eller Beck and Waller Hill Beck.

    Both rise very quickly after heavy rain.

    Work started in March 2015.

    New flood storage areas can hold a combined total of 111 million gallons of water which is equivalent to 5.2 million bathtubs.

    A transgender woman prisoner, who has been jailed for life for sexually assaulting and raping other inmates, used her "transgender persona" to put herself in contact with vulnerable women, a court heard.

    Karen White, 52, admitting sexually assaulting two women inmates and raping two other women before she was jailed.

    White, who was born male but now identifies as a woman and is transitioning, must serve a minimum term of nine-and-a-half years before parole can be considered.

    White appeared by video link from HMP Leeds, and sat impassive during the hearing, wearing a patterned blouse, glasses and shoulder-length blonde hair.

    She attacked two women while at HMP New Hall, a women's prison, between September and October last year.

    At the time she was on remand for other offences.

  4. Humber Bridge toll could be scrapped in devolved Yorkshirepublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 11 October 2018

    Tolls on the Humber Bridge are a barrier to economic growth and could be scrapped if Yorkshire had devolution, it's been claimed.

    Stewart Arnold, the leader of the Yorkshire Party, believes that if the region had similar political powers to Scotland or Wales, then charges could be removed.

    Mr Arnold says he's looking to the example of the Severn Bridge, which links England and Wales, which is getting rid of its £5.60 charge by December.

    He said: "This is less a bridge and more of a barrier.

    "It's been hanging around our neck in this part of the world for a very long time."

    A search has been launched after two teenagers went missing from their homes in Scarborough.

    Sophie Thornton, 16, and Darren-Lee Wilkinson, 17, were last seen outside Scarborough College just before 09:00.

    A transgender prisoner has been jailed for life after admitting sexually assaulting two women inmates at New Hall Prison in Wakefield and raping two other women before she was jailed.

    Karen White, 52, was described as a "predator" who was a danger to women and children, Leeds Crown Court heard.

    White, who was born male but now identifies as a woman and is transitioning, was jailed for two counts of rape, two sexual assaults and one offence of wounding.

    • A major search was launched at about 19:30 on Wednesday to find the light aircraft which came down close to Beverley Airfield, near Leven
    • The police, firefighters and the coastguard were all present on the scene while local farmers used headlights on their vehicles to search the fields
    • When the light aircraft was eventually found, both the pilot and the passenger were discovered with fatal injuries
    • Their victims' names haven't yet been released, but their families have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers

    A new shopping centre in Leeds opens its doors today.

    The Springs at Thorpe Park is 350,000 sq ft of shops, restaurants and a gym and also includes a 10-screen cinema which is due to open in Spring next year.

    There are already some big names in retail who have set up outlets there and more are due to be announced over the coming weeks.

    Two men knocked on the door of a property at Braybrook Court on 18 September and told the resident they were investigating a crime and needed to come in.

    One of them stayed with the owner while the other searched the house and took things which they said were evidence and left.

    Later on, the victim was called by his bank who told him there had been fraudulent activity on his account.

    Anyone who recognises the man in the picture is being asked to contact police.

  14. Copter search alerted farmer to East Yorkshire plane crashpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 11 October 2018

    An East Yorkshire farmer says the first he knew of a fatal plane crash on his land was when he saw a helicopter search under way.

    Peter Harrison, from Wilfholme, says other farmers went out on their quad bikes to look for the light aircraft, which was eventually found by his son.

    He said: "At about 19:30, we saw the helicopter go up and start looking and then they were going around within about a mile of the farm, searching with their lights. That went on until about 22:30 or 23:00."

    Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has called for the creation of a 'Premier League 2' to help Championship clubs receive more television revenue.

    Leeds earned £7.5m in 2017 under the EFL television deal, compared to a guaranteed £100m for the team that finishes bottom of the Premier League.

    Six of Leeds' 12 league games this season have been moved for TV coverage.

    "We lose money and we are creating a show that is high-interest for everybody," said Radrizzani.

    Police are trying to find a missing 84-year-old man in Sheffield.

    Aitaraj Subba was reported missing from Wincobank on Wednesday 10 October.

    He wast last seen on Blackstock Road, Gleadless Valley, at about 17:00.

    Aitaraj is described as around 4ft 8ins tall, with short black hair.

    He may also be wearing a black Nepalese-style cap.

    An East Yorkshire farmer has told how a light aircraft crashed on his land.

    It was his son who found the wreckage of the plane - two people died in the crash.

    Peter Harrison, from Wilfholme, said the plane crashed into a fence at the boundary with his neighbour's land.

    The aircraft had crashed about a mile from Beverley Airfield, killing both people on board.

    Mr Harrison said: "Somebody had told him [his son] where it had gone down and he'd sent the police down and they couldn't find it.

    "They came back and he said 'I know exactly where it could be' and he went and he found it straight away."

    The head of a University Technical College (UTC) in Sheffield has rubbished a report claiming UTCs are failing students.

    The report from The Education Policy Institute says more than half of students end up dropping out, and students at the colleges don't progress as well as those in standard education.

    Nick Crew, the executive principal at Sheffield UTC, insists they're sending more students into further education and they are doing subjects the country needs.

    "UTCs themselves are sending far more students as a percentage into STEM focused subjects at universities that the country really needs than other school setting," he said.

    "The national rate is about 7% of students going into apprenticeships from schools, but for us in Sheffield 40% of our UTC students are going to very high value apprenticeships with companies like Jaguar Land Rover, BMW and Boeing."

    The AAIB explained how it begins an inspection into an air crash:

    It said: "For a field investigation, typically we send a small team of inspectors selected from these disciplines to the accident site or to the location of the aircraft following a serious incident.

    "Our inspectors’ priority is to document and preserve evidence to try to understand the initial circumstances of the accident.

    "Flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders are recovered or, for light aircraft accidents, electronic devices such as smart phones, tablets and GPS units are taken as they may provide helpful clues to understand what happened and why."
