A 63-year-old man has been left "shaken" after having a liquid, believed to be petrol, poured through the letterbox of his home in Hull.
No fire was lit and Humberside Police are treating the incident, on Endike Lane, as attempted arson with intent to endanger life.
Insp Mark Peasgood said: "Officers are currently trying to establish whether this was done on purpose or as a prank. To make it clear, this kind of thing isn’t a joke."
Residents of an East Yorkshire village have said they've been left saddened by a light aircraft crash which killed a pilot and passenger.
People living in and around Leven took part in attempts to locate the pair after the plane crashed near Beverley Airfield last night.
The plane was flying south from the Scottish Borders when it crashed at about 19:30 on Wednesday.
One unnamed local man has told the BBC: "It's something we don't have down here. The airfield's been there for a long while and I don't think we've had any fatalities. It's a sad job."

The family of a boy who was knifed to death in the Lowedges area of Sheffield earlier this year has said nothing can "rectify the cowardly actions" that led to his death.
Samuel Baker, 15, was found lying on grass near Lowedges Road on Thursday 24 May bleeding heavily from his chest.
An unnamed 16-year-old boy has been detained for two years and eight months after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
In a statement, Samuel Baker's family said they were "satisfied" the killer has been sentenced.
"Samuel’s family and friends can try to begin the healing process now and remember who he was: a caring, talented brother, uncle and son."

A 16-year-old boy is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed in a park in Leeds.
The teenager was found with a stab wound in Lovell Park, on North Street, with an ambulance and police officers called to the scene.
He was taken to hospital for emergency treatment, with police cordoning off the scene and launching an investigation.
West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information about what happened, to come forward.
A light aircraft which crashed in East Yorkshire killing the pilot and passenger was flying south from the Scottish Borders, police have revealed.
The plane was approaching the landing strip at Beverley Airfield when it crashed near the village of Leven last night, the force says.
Humberside Police first received a report of the crash at about 19:30, and a search was launched to find the plane, with members of the public offering to help as well.
The force says it was told that the passenger and pilot were safe, however this information turned out to be incorrect.
Both were both found to have fatal injuries after the light aircraft was located in the corner of a field some distance away from the road.
An investigation has now been launched with Air Accidents Investigation Branch inspectors currently on the scene, according to Humberside Police.
A judge says Samuel Baker's death was "senseless" and "represents a story that is too often repeated".

The boy, who was 15 at the time but is now 16, killed Samuel Baker in the Lowedges area of the city in May and pleaded guilty to his manslaughter last week.
The killing was one of a spate of knife-related deaths in Sheffield earlier this year.
The judge at Sheffield Crown Court, Mr Justice Nicklin, described Samuel's death as "another senseless death caused by knife crime".
He refused an application by the Sheffield Star to lift the defendant's anonymity.
