  1. Hull Guildhall's Time Ball set to rise and fall once againpublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 19 October 2018

    The Time Ball on Hull's landmark Guildhall is to be fully restored thanks to an award of nearly £300,000 from the National Lottery.

    The ball is one of just a few nationally and is the only maritime timepiece on a municipal building.

    It dates back to 1918 and is the highest in the UK.

    Once complete, it will join a handful of other working time balls in the UK, including ones at Greenwich and Carlton Hill in Edinburgh.

    Hull councillor Daren Hale says the restoration will mean the Hull Time Ball "can tell its full story and become a popular visitor attraction".

    A South Yorkshire school and a hospital are joining together in what's believed to be the first partnership of its kind in a bid to give pupils a direct route into a health service career.

    Hall Cross Academy in Doncaster and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals are joining together to make the school what's known as a "Foundation School in Health".

    Staff at the NHS hospital hope it will help pupils wanting to go into the health service, external, as the trust tries to meet future demand.

    Dr Alasdair Strachan, from the trust, said: "By partnering with Hall Cross Academy, we'll increase opportunities for students to embark on a rewarding career in health and lay a promising foundation for the future of our local hospitals."

    The partnership, which starts today, includes work experience, information from experienced medics, internships and on-the-job learning.

  3. Another 'glorious summer' in York?published at 09:40 British Summer Time 19 October 2018

    A "pop-up" Shakespearean theatre which entertained thousands in York over the summer looks set to return to the city.

    After a "glorious summer" under the sun of York, as Mr Shakespeare himself may have put it, the Rose Theatre parted company with the city with "such sweet sorrow" last month.

    Before leaving, the roofless £3m replica Elizabethan theatre attracted almost 80,000 visitors to see four different plays.

    The temporary structure was built in just 28 days in a city centre car park next to the historic 13th Century Clifford's Tower.

    It was constructed to a circular design similar to those erected on Bankside in Shakespeare's day.

    Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, which brought the theatre to York, has applied for permission to build it again in 2019 and in 2020, with senior city councillors now backing the plans.

    East Yorkshire's Kyle Edmund has thrashed Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-0 6-2 to reach the European Open quarter-finals.

    Edmund, the top seed in Antwerp, won the first 10 games of the match and completed the win in just 57 minutes.

    The world number 15, who's originally from near Beverley, will play qualifier Ilya Ivashka in the last eight as he bids to win his first ATP title.

    Earlier, Britain's Cameron Norrie narrowly missed out on a place in the quarter-finals, losing in three tight sets to Diego Schwartzman.

    Have you seen Angela Senior? She's from Wakefield and hasn't been seen since she was at St James's Hospital in Leeds on Thursday afternoon.

    It's thought likely the 49-year-old is in the Wakefield area, according to police.

    She's described as white with short brown hair. When last seen she was wearing a thigh-length hooded khaki jacket and blue and white patterned trousers.

    She was also possibly wearing slippers and was carrying a large white carrier bag, police say.

    Anyone who has seen her or knows her whereabouts is being asked to contact police.

  7. Arrest after shop owner attacked fighting robberpublished at 08:43 British Summer Time 19 October 2018

    A 32-year-old man's been arrested after allegedly hitting a shopkeeper over the head with a bottle during a botched robbery in South Yorkshire.

    The incident happened on Wednesday when a man entered a shop on Brinsworth Road, Catcliffe, and threatened staff demanding cash and cigarettes.

    The shop owner then entered the store and tried to detain the offender, police say.

    The owner was then hit over the head with a bottle, causing injuries to his head.

    The suspect was arrested on suspicion of robbery and also arrested in connection with an incident on Tuesday in which cash and cigarettes were also stolen.

  8. Mum stole £32,000 from daughter's nurserypublished at 08:28 British Summer Time 19 October 2018

    An East Yorkshire mother who stole £32,000 from her daughter's pre-school has been given a suspended prison sentence.

    Helen Peel, 32, from Beverley, was a treasurer of Walkington Pre-school at the time of the theft between March and December 2017.

    Hull Crown Court heard the mum-of-two became heavily in debt after the break down of her marriage.

    Peel, of Watson Drive, pleaded guilty to theft by employee at a previous Beverley Magistrates' Court hearing.

    The court heard the money she had stolen was given by parents for their children to attend the pre-school.

    She volunteered for the unpaid treasurer role which included bookkeeping, looking after accounts and keeping financial records at the nursery, which is a registered charity.

    Peel took a number of large sums over the nine-month period, including one of £10,000 and another of £3,000.

    Judge Mark Bury suspended an eight-month jail term for 12 months and ordered Peel to complete a rehabilitation order and carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.

  10. Work to secure fire-damaged Bridlington pub site beginspublished at 08:08 British Summer Time 19 October 2018

    Work is under way this morning to secure the site around a Bridlington pub which was destroyed by fire earlier this week.

    An inspection at the Londesborough Hotel yesterday confirmed it was "unsafe" following the blaze which happened on Wednesday afternoon.

    At one point, gas and electricity supplies were turned off because of concerns about the stability of the building.

    A road closure will remain around the building until the the site is secured, an East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson says.

    A car was stuck on the tram tracks, causing some delays to Supertram services.

    It's reported that the vehicle has now been moved.

  13. Weekend closure for A64 between York and Maltonpublished at 07:26 British Summer Time 19 October 2018

    Drivers are being warned that part of a major road from Leeds to Scarborough will be closed all weekend from tonight.

    The A64 will be shut between York and Malton while engineers rebuild part of the carriageway.

    It's the first of three weekends when the road's going to be closed.

    Mark Ramsden, from Highways England, says: "We'll be working as fast as we can, but people will need to plan additional time for their journeys."

  14. Disabled Hull teen forced to sit in train loo - Familypublished at 07:09 British Summer Time 19 October 2018

    A disabled teenager had to sit in the toilet on a busy LNER service from London to Hull because his reserved seat was occupied, his family says.

    The family of Connor Lynes, who's had two major strokes and now suffers from neurofatigue and back problems, say passengers refused to move for him on the London-Hull service on Thursday.

    His aunt, Sara, says a member of staff promised to involve the train manager but failed to do so.

    "People weren't willing to help. Connor was struggling, his colour had drained," she says.

    The BBC has asked LNER for comment.

    If you're making a journey on the rails in North, South or West Yorkshire today most services appear to be running to time at the moment.

    However:

    • The 07:24 Sheffield to Bridlington service is currently delayed
    • The 07:28 Bradford Forster Square to Leeds service has been cancelled
    • The 07:48 Wakefield Westgate to Glasgow Central service is delayed
    • The 08:00 Bradford Interchange to York is delayed

    Two police officers could face criminal charges over the death of former Sheffield Wednesday footballer Dalian Atkinson,who was shot with a Taser.

    Mr Atkinson 48, died in August 2016 after contact with officers at his father's house in Shropshire.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it had referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

    West Mercia Police said it "understands the need for answers".

    Mr Atkinson started his career at Ipswich Town before moving to Sheffield Wednesday, Real Sociedad, Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe in Turkey.

    The IOPC said during its investigation, three West Mercia Police officers were interviewed twice under criminal caution and served with gross misconduct notices.

    The actions of the third officer have not been referred to the CPS.

    A people carrier has been seized by police after officers found the brake was being held together by a shoelace.

    The Bulgarian-registered Mercedes was found at about midday at Parkgate, Rotherham.

    South Yorkshire Police said the vehicle had "seen better days" and the driver had been reported.
