    An award for returning empty derelict properties back into use has been won by Hull City Council.

    In the last five years, 700 homes have been brought back by the authority to a liveable standard.

    The council, along with housing charity Giroscope, has won the Best Partnership Award from the Empty Homes Agency.

    This CCTV image of a man police want to speak to following a burglary in the Huntington area of York has been issued in the hope it'll jog someone's memory:

    The theft happened on Wednesday 10 October at about 22:00 with the male suspect believed to have gained entry through a rear door.

    A number of valuables were stolen from the property and bank cards were also taken and used at a number of stores across York, police say.

    The only remaining polar bear in South Korea has died, just weeks before it was to due be relocated to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, external in Doncaster.

    The animal, named Tongki, had lived in a zoo south of the capital Seoul for more than 20 years.

    Activists wanted better living conditions for the bear, which lived in a 330 sq m concrete enclosure, but it's now died of old age.

    Yorkshire Wildlife Park runs the award-winning Project Polar which is one of the biggest polar bear reserves in the world.

    Members of dance troupe Phoenix Dance return to their home city of Leeds tonight for a series of performances.

    Phoenix at Home is at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds for three nights.

    Artistic director Sharon Watson said: "This last year has been amazing for Phoenix.

    "We have toured around the country with Windrush: Movement of the People, being nominated for several awards, met the Prime Minister, performed at Tilbury Docks, and visited China to promote Leeds and Yorkshire as a cultural powerhouse.

    "And now we're are preparing to head home where we always enjoy performing. We were born in Leeds, we live in Leeds, and we're very proud of Leeds."

    This year’s production is a reworked version of the classic Troy Game, an excerpt from a new piece by Sandrine Monin and a brand new comedic work about modern living called Spam.

    The number of potential victims of modern slavery identified in North Yorkshire has risen significantly over the past three years, according to the county's police force.

    Officers says modern slavery in the county is most likely to exist in low paid work - such as hand car washes, nail bars, restaurants and takeaways.

    The police report issued today, on International Anti-Slavery Day, external, also points out the fact the county is largely rural, means vulnerable people are at risk of exploitation within the farming and food processing industries.

    A man was arrested on suspicion of modern day slavery offences following raids at car washes in West Yorkshire earlier this month.

    Two Romanian men with burns on their hands and arms were rescued after two sites were raided in Barnsley.

    A man has been jailed for six and a half years for robbing two teenagers at knife-point in Sheffield.

    Meeshack Menzies, 23, threatened a 17-year-old boy with a knife then pushed a 16-year-old girl to the floor and tried to take her jewellery.

    It happened on 17 May on Eastern Avenue in the city.

    Menzies, of Braemore Road in Sheffield, was found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday of robbery, attempted robbery and possessing an offensive weapon.

    A giant H has been installed in Hull city centre to mark the graduation of around 400 students from Hull College.

    The graduation ceremony takes place today at Hull City Hall.

    Students will be receiving degrees in subjects including art and design, business and management and construction and engineering.

    The giant H is based on the college’s new logo, which was created by third year student Laura Jones.

    Doncaster Council fell foul to criminals after scammers managed to change the bank details of one of the council's suppliers to their own, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Documents, which are set to be presented to the audit committee next Thursday, show the council was unable to recover £6,531 from nine payments fraudulently obtained by crooks.

    But the wider report, which be debated by councillors, shows the local authority's fraud team prevented a number of attempts by scammers.

    Those attempts ranged from false invoices to bank detail changes.

    The council says it takes a zero tolerance approach to fraud and seeks to educate staff on identifying fraudulent behaviour.

    Millions of pounds worth of additional funding, external is being given to councils in Yorkshire to help pay for adult social care over the winter.

    Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, says: "The extra funding is aimed at reducing delayed transfers of care and will be allocated to councils based on the adult social care relative needs formula."

    An extra £2.5m in additional funding is to be given to North Yorkshire County Council, along with almost £2.3m in Bradford, £1.5m in the East Riding of Yorkshire and £2.7m in the Sheffield region.

    A public meeting is being held in York to debate the future of the city's Bootham Park Hospital site.

    The mental health unit was closed suddenly three years ago, after being found "not fit for purpose".

    It is due to be sold to the highest bidder.

    Today's meeting has been organised by York Labour MP, Rachael Maskell, who says people should have the chance to discuss their ideas on how they would like the land to be used.

    Almost 8,000 people have signed the MP's petition, external, which has been handed in to Parliament calling for the site to stay in public hands and be used for health or social care.

  12. Search for homes for 400 'stolen' animals continuespublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 18 October 2018

    A bid to reunite hundreds of suspected stolen animals with their rightful owners is continuing in North Yorkshire.

    More than 400 animals, including two dogs, 90 sheep and goats, 30 turkeys, 80 ducks, nine rabbits and 10 pigeons were found in the Thirsk area last Friday.

    A 42-year-old man from Ripon was arrested on suspicion of the theft of animals, money laundering and breaching an order disqualifying him from keeping animals.

    He was later released under investigation while inquiries continue.

    Sgt Kevin Kelly, from North Yorkshire Police's Rural Taskforce, said: "The sheer volume of animals makes this a complex investigation".

    Officers say in particular they are trying to locate the owners of 11 Swaledale tup lambs and want to speak to anyone who lost or sold 30 turkeys on or around Friday 12 October.

    The owner of about 40 chickens had been identified, the force added.

    Four cases of salmonella linked to a food product are being investigated, Hull City Council has confirmed.

    The Food Standards Agency has recalled Dr Zak's Barn Farmed Liquid Egg White after testing found a number of batches contained the bacteria.

    Public Health England is investigating, the authority adds.

  14. Bee sculpture secured in memory of Manchester attack victimpublished at 10:30 British Summer Time 18 October 2018

    A teenage survivor of the Manchester Arena bombing has succeeded in her bid to bring a bee sculpture commemorating the attack to South Yorkshire.

    Amelia Thompson (above), 13, from Dronfield, Derbyshire, raised £3,455 for the sculpture in memory of Sheffield victim Kelly Brewster.

    Ms Brewster's employers Aviva Insurance added to the total, taking it to £21,500.

    A stranger then donated a further £500, taking the final bid to £22,000 and securing the sculpture.

    Over 100 bee sculptures were placed around Manchester to form an art trail in memory of the victims.

    Amelia is now hoping to find a home for the bee in Sheffield.

    Hull FC legend Johnny Whiteley is to be inducted into rugby league's hall of fame, it's been announced.

    Whiteley played 418 games for the Black and Whites and won 15 caps for Great Britain.

    He also coached the Great Britain rugby league team and won the Ashes in Australia.

    He will be inducted into the hall of fame next month.

  16. Leeds MP calls for review into city sex zonepublished at 09:49 British Summer Time 18 October 2018

    A Leeds MP has officially asked for an independent review into Leeds' managed red light zone.

    The area aims to protect sex workers from abuse and supporters of it said the women who use it feel "safer".

    But Labour MP Hilary Benn has written to the leader of Leeds City Council saying he's had "continuing complaints" from people living and working in Holbeck.

    Residents living near the red light zone have said they will protest every two weeks until the sex trade is moved.

    Some locals say they've been plagued by anti-social behaviour since the zone was set up.

    Mr Benn says the council needs to solve the stand-off between those who say the scheme is working and those who want it scrapped.

    He's calling for a full independent review involving local people, councillors and charities as well as the working women themselves.

  17. First electric train restored after being found in hedgepublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 18 October 2018

    The world's first electric train, which was found in a hedge in North Yorkshire, has been restored to its former glory, external.

    The electric autocar, which in engineering terms was decades ahead of its time and was seen as the future of rail travel, was built in York in 1903.

    The autocar, the only surviving vehicle of its kind left in the world, was found in a farmer's field near Kirkbymoorside in 2011.

    It ran on lines in North Yorkshire and in Hartlepool, powered by a large petrol engine with a generator which supplied electricity to the wheels.

    The train has now been restored and will start carrying passengers on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway at Skipton next year.

    Boy band Westlife are coming to Sheffield as part of their reunion tour, with new music being announced to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

    They're set to return without Brian McFadden and are expected to perform some of their greatest hits, including Unbreakable, Flying Without Wings and You Raise Me Up.

    Shane, Nicky, Mark and Kian will play Sheffield Arena on Friday 7 June 2019, with tickets going on sale on Thursday 25 October.

    I'm at the scene of a pub fire in Bridlington where investigations are under way this morning to assess the stability of the building following yesterday's blaze.

    Over 50 firefighters and ambulance crews attended the blaze at the Londesborough pub, on West Street, on Wednesday afternoon.

    No one was injured during the incident.

    It is not yet known how the fire in the upper floor and roof area started.

    One eyewitness said the former hotel just burst into flames and quickly became a major fire.

    I've been told that fire crews will be coming back later to check the current situation and make sure the fire hasn't re-ignited.
