    There's been a rise in the number of violent crimes recorded by police in North Yorkshire.

    Government figures reveal in the year up to June it's increased by 20%.

    Overall recorded offences in North Yorkshire have risen by 9% to a total of nearly 41,000 crimes in North Yorkshire.

    Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan believes the increase is due to the force recording crime better.

    An inspection on a building which caught fire in Bridlington yesterday has confirmed it is unsafe.

    An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said a road closure will remain around the Londesborough pub until the the site is secured.

    Around 50 firefighters and ambulance crews attended the blaze yesterday afternoon.

    At one point gas and electricity supplies were turned off, because of concerns about the stability of the building.

  4. Anti-terror plant pots part of town centre makeoverpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 18 October 2018

    Counter-terrorism measures will be included in a multi-million pound makeover of Huddersfield's town centre.

    The £2.5m project will include the installation of large planters, known as Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) measures, to be used as protective security for crowded places.

    The HVM planters will also boast "dual functionality" by enhancing and "greening" the street environment, the council said.

    Kirklees Council has agreed to fund the Huddersfield Town Centre Design Framework (HTCDF) to create "a high quality public realm".

    Key sites earmarked for refurbishment and regeneration include the rail station and the piazza.

    Work has been completed on two new storm pumping stations in Laxton.

    The Howdenshire Flood Alleviation scheme cost £3.7m.

    It will reduce the flood risk to about 1,000 properties, businesses and farmland.

    The new pumps have the capacity to deal with the quantity of water found in four Olympic-sized swimming pools in just over an hour.

    The pumps will protect properties between Goole and Brough.

    North Yorkshire Police have released images following a crash on the A59 between Skipton and Harrogate yesterday.

    Two people were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following the crash near Menwith Hill.

    It happened on the B6451/A59 crossroads near Norwood and Menwith Hill.

    The road was closed for several hours.

    Police want to talk to this man a part of an investigation into a series of hate crime incidents at the office of Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff.

    Three incidents took place at the Labour MP's constituency offices in Wellington Road, Dewsbury, between 2 and 3 July 2018, between 9 and 10 August 2018 and on 17 August.

    On each occasion offensive material was left on the steps of her office.

    Police have recorded all three as racist incidents.

    Officers said a man in his 50s, arrested during the inquiry, has been eliminated from the investigation.

    Police in Barnsley say they need the help of the public to find a wanted man.

    Ricky Lee Bates, 33, of no fixed address, is wanted in connection with a series of shoplifting offences.

    Officers say he is known to regularly visit Wombwell, Wath and Bolton on Dearne.

    Anyone who has seen or heard from him recently, or knows where he is, is asked to contact police immediately.

    Hull City's goalkeeper has received three points on his driving licence for speeding.

    David Marshall was caught driving his BMW at 51mph in an area with a 40mph speed limit in Cumbria earlier this year.

    The 33-year-old has been fined £660 and ordered to pay £151 in costs.

    Emergency medical technician Laura Major has taken to twitter to appeal to the public to treat ambulance staff with respect when they arrive to help someone.

    The ghosts of York are to feature in their own map, in a new initiative from Visit York, the organisation which promotes the city around the world.

    They say it's to cater for the city’s growing marketing in paranormal tourism.

    People are being invited to log their supernatural experiences, which will then appear on a live map charting the entities unwilling to leave their spiritual homes.

    Head of Visit York, Paul Whiting, says: “Ghosts have been synonymous with York for centuries, with stories of unexplained phenomena featuring in just about every guidebook about the ghosts of Britain.”

    Paul says the idea is to create the first comprehensive map of York’s ghosts, past and present, where the most famous ghostly experiences can be logged alongside new ones, which he says "take place on an almost daily basis.”

    Anyone whose had a ghostly encounter can log the experience at: visityork.org/ghostlog, external, and the entries will then be transferred onto a regularly updated map.

  15. Sheffield council says 'dangerous' flowerbeds will staypublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 18 October 2018

    A couple, who were told they would have to get rid of their flowers because they were "a danger to road users", have now been told they can stay.

    Brian and Sally Williams planted the blooms about 30-years-ago on the narrow Hollin House Lane in Loxley, near Sheffield, to encourage wildlife and bring colour to the area.

    Sheffield Council sent a letter saying the couple had a week to do the work or pay for it to be done by the authority.

    The council's action followed a complaint about the flowers being on the public highway.

    However, they have been told the plants can now stay, providing they move their compost bins.

    Police are appealing for information after two people were hit by a car following an argument in Royston, Barnsley.

    A 33-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man suffered serious injuries when they were hit by a grey BMW 320D which then drove off, police say.

    The crash happened at about 20:00 on Thursday 30 August on Midland Road, near to the junction with The Lane.

    A West Yorkshire blogger has been named as one of the most influential people with a disability in the UK.

    Chloe Tear, from Leeds, was added to the Shaw Trust's Disability Power One Hundred List at a ceremony in London last night.

    Her blog Life as a Cerebral Palsy Student, external has led the twenty-year-old to work with more then fifty charities and organisations, including the BBC.

  18. Man charged over Hillsborough stab deathpublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 18 October 2018

    A man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a man in Hillsborough.

    Victim Gavin Singleton, 31, was injured on Walkley Lane at about 00:20 on Sunday 23 September.

    He died on Saturday 6 October from a single stab wound to the chest.

    Danny Trotter, 24, of no fixed address, was previously charged with attempted murder.

    He has now been charged with murder, supply of controlled drugs and possession of an offensive weapon, police say.

    Another man, a 29-year-old, was also injured, but has been released from hospital.

  19. Pilot and passenger named in Leven air crashpublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 18 October 2018

    The names of a pilot and passenger who died in a light aircraft crash near Beverley airfield in Leven last week have been released.

    Pilot Tony Cook and his passenger Richard Lewis died after their plane came down in a farmer's field last Wednesday at about 19:30.

    Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. They had died from multiple injuries.

    An inquest into their deaths was opened and adjourned to a later date today.
