Simon Blevins, 26, Richard Roberts, 36, and Rich Loizou, 31, became the first UK anti-fracking protesters to be sent to prison, after climbing on lorries at Cuadrilla's site in Lancashire.

Court of Appeal judges ruled they should be released from prison and instead imposed two-year conditional discharges.

The judgement was met with applause and singing from supporters in the court.

Blevins, from Sheffield, Loizou, from Devon, and Roberts, of London, were jailed after being convicted of public nuisance at Preston Crown Court in September.

Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett said to jail them immediately was "manifestly excessive".

    Quote Message

In our judgment, the appropriate sentence which should have been imposed... was a community order with a significant requirement of unpaid work.

    Quote Message

But these appellants have been in prison for six weeks. As a result, and only for that reason, we have concluded that the appropriate sentence now is a conditional discharge for two years.

Plans to build 211 homes on farmland in a Doncaster village have been approved by councillors, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    DevelopmentImage source, Google

In 2016, Linden Homes had a scheme accepted to build scores of properties on open land in Hatfield, but the firm had requested a change to one of the conditions imposed in the original planning consent.

The first phase of the proposed development, between Doncaster Road and Lings Lane, received a raft of objections from residents and Hatfield Parish Council.

The second phase would see an extra 200 properties being built.

Residents said the loss of green agricultural land and the impact on trees and the environment was a concern, while others made issue of the increasing traffic on Doncaster Road and the risk of flooding.

The new wording on the building conditions state no development will take place until a plan is drawn up to deal with the disposal of foul and surface water drainage.
