The flying school base is set to close in 2020 as part of a wider review of military estates which will also see the closure of the famous "Dambusters" base at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.

But during a special debate in parliament, the Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton, Kevin Hollinrake, warned that local jobs are at risk because of the closure.

The MP said: "The local community is very proud of the base's historic contribution to our previous fights against tyranny."

Defence minister Tobias Ellwood acknowledged it was difficult for communities to see RAF bases close.

However, he said the decision "made sense" given that the Tucano training aircraft is set to go out of service with fast-jet training moving elsewhere.

  12. Lindholme prison officers must return to 'full regime'published at 17:09 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has won a High Court order forcing prison officers to operate a "full regime" at crisis-hit HMP Lindholme, meaning staff will be forced to turn up for work.

    HMP Lindholme

Staff at the "volatile" prison near Doncaster operated a "controlled lockdown" on Friday after two prison officers were attacked by inmates the previous evening.

At the High Court today, Mr Justice Goss extended an injunction the MoJ obtained on Friday.

It requires the Prison Officers Association (POA) to instruct its members to return to a full regime at HMP Lindholme - until a full trial of the dispute can be heard.

The POA say they did not instruct staff to take any action, and that officers decided to "restrict the regime in the interests of the safety of themselves and prisoners".

HMP Lindholme, which currently holds about 850 prisoners, was named by the MoJ as one of ten of "the most challenging prisons" in England and Wales.
