    Some of the biggest names in snooker are in Hull for the 2018 UK Seniors Snooker Championship.

    Former world champions including Dennis Taylor, Joe Johnson and also the "Whirlwind" Jimmy White will battle it out for the title over the next two days.

    Hull City Council has joined up with the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, and the Bonus Arena, to host the tournament for at least the next three years.

    A new warehouse opens in Leeds today which will help stock food banks across Yorkshire.

    Based in Hunslet, it's a partnership between Fareshare Yorkshire, external, which is the UK's largest food redistribution charity, and the Leeds South and East Foodbank., external

    Fareshare Yorkshire's Jonathan Williams says it will transform how charities can access left over food.

    He says: "It means charities which have been waiting up to a year can now access a weekly delivery of surplus foods."

    Sheffield council has announced plans to reduce the numbers of trees felled in the city following talks with campaigners.

    Councillor Lewis Dagnall said a deal had been brokered with contractor Amey that would see the company "spend more to retain more trees" in Sheffield.

    Thousands of trees have been cut down under the council's tree felling and replacement contract since 2012.

    The work has been on hold since March following a series of protests about the future of the city's street trees.

    The announcement comes following three days of talks between the council, Amey and Sheffield Tree Action Group.

    Mr Dagnall said: "We've put forward a proposal on behalf of the council and Amey which would see fewer trees replaced over a phased period."

    It's not yet been revealed how many fewer trees will be felled and replaced under the proposals.

    A man's been left with serious injuries to his face after being attacked by a group of men in York.

    About four or five men carried out the assault outside the Grand Hotel on Station Road at about 04:00 on Sunday morning, police say.

    The victim, who's in his 20s, was left with a fractured cheek bone, a possible fractured eye socket, and severe bruising.

    Anyone with information about the attack, or who saw what happened, is being asked to contact police.

    Sheffield's Def Leppard have been announced as the headliners for next year's Download Festival.

    The band, who have been together for 41 years, will top the bill at next year's festival, alongside American acts Tool and Slipknot.

    Def Leppard are expected to play the enitrety of their number one album, Hysteria.

    The festival will be held at Donington Park in Leicestershire on 14 June, with thousands of metal fans attending.

    Footage of North Yorkshire Police officers chasing a car driving at high speeds around Scarborough has been released by the force.

    The car, which was driven by 26-year-old Abraham Fox, was caught on a police camera ripping through the Eastfield area on 12 July 2018.

    The dramatic pursuit ends when the driver slams on the brakes, resulting in a crash.

    Fox, of Romanwood Gardens, Bradford, was jailed for 17 months after pleading guilty to dangerous driving at York Crown Court.

  12. £100,000 boost to help Hull Minster preserve its historypublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 23 October 2018

    Hull Minster's been given almost £100,0000 which it's hoped willl help attract more visitors to the historic building.

    The Heritage Lottery funding will pay for specialists who'll look into the history of the minster and coordinate its conservation.

    This latest funding comes after a multi-million pound refurbishment which led to the interior being restored and remodelled.

    Hull Minster was built in the 1300s, replacing an earlier chapel, after King Edward I granted the former settlement of Wyke a Royal Charter and re-named it Kings Town upon Hull.

    The demolition of a huge 1960s office building in the centre of York has been completed.

    Work to bring down Hudson House (pictured above), which was the British Rail Eastern Region HQ, to make way for new luxury apartments began in February this year.

    The area where the building was has been renamed as the Hudson Quarter.

    Work is scheduled to start in February 2019 on a new office building and three luxury apartment blocks.

    Neil Sinclair, chief executive of developer Palace Capital, said: "Hudson Quarter will be a vibrant community for people to live and work."

    Mr Sinclair said there'd been a great deal of interest in the demolition at the site, with a number of "spectators" stopping by to watch as the work progressed.

    The new development will have 127 apartments, 34,500 sq ft of office space and a connecting walkway through to York Railway Station.

    A cyclist from Barnsley has been seriously hurt after he was involved in a collision with a car this morning.

    It happened in the Jump area at about 07:05, when a silver Volkswagen Lupo was travelling along Cemetery Road.

    As the car turned onto Roebuck Hill it was in collision with a cyclist travelling from the Dearne Valley Parkway down the hill.

    A 58-year-old man was left seriously injured as a result and is in a stable condition in hospital.

    A haul of suspected stolen power tools worth £15,000 has been recovered by police in York.

    They were discovered in a garden in Clifton on Saturday morning.

    It's believed they were stolen in recent burglaries from commercial premises in Haxby, Wigginton, Stockton on the Forest, and Crockey Hill.

    A 38-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were arrested at the scene, and have since been released under investigation.

    The Nap, which featured at Sheffield Theatres back in March, made the move to the US earlier this year.

    Actor Mark Addy, from York, featured in the British version of the show.

    Now playing off Broadway at the Samuel J Freidman theatre, the play has been positively reviewed, being selected as The New York Times Critics' Pick, external.

    A cross-party panel has criticised the decision for Rotherham's Labour MP to lose her job as shadow equalities minister after speaking out about child abuse in 2017.

    Radio commentator Iain Dale said it was an "absolute disgrace" for Sarah Champion to stand down from the opposition front bench after her Sun newspaper article on child sex claims.

    Labour's Angela Smith, Lib Dem Layla Moran and Conservative Amber Rudd also backed the Rotherham MP.
