    The Filey Coastguard say they are "currently keeping a cordon on Filey beach in place due to an unconfirmed historical ordnance".

    Parts of the beach are "out of bounds" at the moment, the rescue team say.

    The crew have put a message on social media saying: "Thank you for your support in staying well back."

  2. Thousands to be spent on road repairs before winter monthspublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 24 October 2018

    Over £67,000 is to be spent on mending a busy road hit by a landslip near Whitby and a cracked wall in Scarborough before winter sets in.

    North Yorkshire county councillors are due to meet on Friday to add the two urgent schemes to the authority's planned works.

    The first is a landslip on Egton Road in Aislaby, near Whitby, where part of the road surface (pictured above) has collapsed.

    It's feared the situation may get worse as winter approaches.

    The committee report notes: "The road is at risk of further slippage. Works need to be completed before further damage is caused by winter tides."

    Repair work is expected to cost about £50,000.

    Meanwhile, in Scarborough, a large crack in a retaining wall on Foreshore Road has been discovered.

    The report notes £17,500 will be used to examine the integrity of the wall.

  3. Car fire closes main Rotherham roadpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 24 October 2018

    A main road in Rotherham had to be closed for a time this morning after a car caught fire.

    Bus services were diverted from Warren Vale, near Rawmarsh, as fire crews brought the blaze under control.

    The cause of death of a woman whose body was found in a house in a North Yorkshire market town is still unknown, according to detectives.

    The body of Rina Yasutake was found at a house in Bondgate, Helmsley, on 25 September.

    A 75-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman who were arrested in connection with the death have been released under investigation.

    Officers are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination and do not yet have a cause or time of the 49-year-old's death, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    The new series of Doctor Who has been a big hit, with the first episode starring Huddersfield's Jodie Whittaker attracting a record audience.

    Obviously, we think one of the reasons it's proved so popular is because it's based in the glorious city of Sheffield, with many landmarks being featured on the show.

    A designer has admitted a failing over the death of a seven-month-old baby who "choked to death" in a cot in North Yorkshire.

    Oscar Abbey was found by his parents, caught in the side of his bed at their York home on 3 November 2016.

    Craig Williams pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to failing to discharge the employer's general duty.

  8. Police pension changes 'a potential game-changer'published at 11:30 British Summer Time 24 October 2018

    Changes to police pensions could lead to job cuts in the future, according to the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

    The government wants forces to increase the amount they contribute to officers' pensions.

    But Humberside PCC Keith Hunter said it would cost the force more than £2.5m next year - and potentially more than £6m every year after that - something which he says could lead to job cuts.

    Mr Hunter said: "It is a real potential game-changer which is why I'm being vocal about it.

    "We're fighting on behalf of our local communities and we're fighting nationally on behalf of the police service."

    Police and Crime Commissioners across the country have today written to the Chancellor Philip Hammond to express their concerns.

    Responding, the Home Office said it was working to understand the impact of the plan.

    A main road through York city centre which has been closed since the early hours of this morning after a man was seriously assaulted has now re-opened.

    A 26-year-old man was attacked on Gillygate with what's described as a "sharp implement", police have confirmed.

    The man has been taken to hospital and as yet there've been no arrests in connection with the incident.

    It's hoped city centre roads will return to normal as soon as possible, but bus operator First York says: "All services are back to normal, but some buses are running late and are being adjusted accordingly."

  10. CPR lessons in Yorkshire proves successfulpublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 24 October 2018

    Almost 30,000 young people were taught CPR in Yorkshire at this year's Restart-a-Heart Day earlier this month.

    Yorkshire Ambulance Service helped deliver the lessons, something it's done for the past five years.

    More than 100,000 people have now been taught the potentially life-saving skill.

    A man has died following a motorbike crash in Barnsley, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    26-year-old Anthony Stirling (pictured) was riding his motorcycle along the A633 Valley Way towards Wombwell at about 19:30 on Sunday 21 October.

    It believed he lost control of the bike before crashing.

    He died at the scene.

    Police say the 35-year-old driver of a car which overtook him before the crash was arrested, but has since been released under investigation.

    Mark Ogden is homeless and hasn't been seen on the streets of the city since 23 August.

    The 49-year-old is also known to have links to Newcastle and Manchester.

    An investigation is continuing in York today into the death of a kitten, whose body was found inside a zipped-up lunch box.

    A project which uses DIY to help lonely and isolated men is expanding its work in East Yorkshire.

    The Men in Sheds project has already been running in towns and cities across Yorkshire.

    A new shed is now being opened in Beverley.

    The venue is used to allow men to get together to talk, and learn new skills such as woodwork, gardening and computing.

    That's up more than 50% compared to five years ago.

  20. Sheffield Parkwood: Consultation begins on 'urban park' planpublished at 08:26 British Summer Time 24 October 2018

    A public consultation has begun on plans for a 150-hectare urban country park close to Sheffield city centre.

    Sheffield Council revealed its ambitions for a "nationally significant" tourist attraction at Parkwood Springs in 2016.

    It has now launched the consultation into a draft 10-year masterplan for the land.

    Proposals include a snow sports centre and mountain bike track, as well as a network of new footpaths.

    Parkwood stretches across hillside from the Victorian Wardsend Cemetery to Neepsend, and includes the former Viridor landfill.

    Cabinet member Mary Lea said: "We've been talking about Parkwood for many years, but the time is right now to develop the city's ambitions for a country park complete with outdoor pursuits and mountain bike trails."

    She said the "giant urban country park" would "create new green lungs right in the heart of our city".

    The six-week consultation will run online, external until 5 December.
