    Rotherham United has become the first football team in Yorkshire to be represented by a team made up of virtual players.

    A team of 16 Fifa players from Rotherham and across the country will play as the club in the Esport Virtual Pro Gaming League, a platform which allows teams of players to compete in the video game online.

    Each player will control a virtual player on the pitch from the comfort of their own homes in a series of regular online fixtures.

    A 23-year-old from Flamborough has become one of the youngest lifeboat helmsmen in the country.

    Will Bell has been a member of the volunteer crew at Flamborough lifeboat station for the past five years.

    He's now completed his training to become the helmsman of the lifeboat, which is called Elizabeth Jane Palmer.

    The lifeboat station says Will is its youngest serving helsman and "one of the youngest in the RNLI".

    Police in Leeds are asking for help identifying this man after jewellery with sentimental value was stolen from an elderly couple by a so-called distraction burglar:

    The man, together with two others, first met the couple at their home in Livinia Grove, Woodhouse, on 2 October and arranged to resurface the couple's driveway.

    They carried out the work, but returned on Saturday 10 October saying they needed to finish the job.

    While doing this, one man asked to use the toilet inside the property and a quantity of expensive jewellery with sentimental value was taken.

    Anyone who recognises the man in the picture is being asked to contact police.

    An autistic South Yorkshire MP who faced criticism for previous racist, homophobic and sexist comments on social media has claimed his eight days in the headlines was "cruel" and he was remorseful for what he had said.

    Jared O'Mara was elected as the Labour MP for Sheffield Hallam when he ousted former deputy PM Nick Clegg, but now sits as an independent.

    He said he cannot attend PMQs because of the noise and also claims he was bullied while a Labour member.

    The MP told BBC Politics Live reporter Elizabeth Glinka that he would be unlikely to contest another election in the near future, but would not rule out standing if the election came in 2022:

    Passengers arriving by car when they could have caught the train have prompted the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle line to add Leeds to the brand.

    The group broke the news with a new front page on their newsletter, on the Leeds platform where almost all passenger trains travelling across the famous railway line start their journey.

  8. Brothers appear in court over Sheffield fatal crashpublished at 12:42 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2018

    Two brothers have appeared in court charged in connection with a Sheffield crash where four people, including a baby, were killed.

    Elliott Bower, 18, of Harborough Avenue, the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision, has been charged with four counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

    He is also charged with handling stolen goods and possession of cannabis.

    Declan Bower, 23, of Harborough Avenue, has been charged with aggravated vehicle taking and death caused by an accident with aggravated factors.

    He is also charged with handling stolen goods, two counts of driving while disqualified, two counts of driving without insurance, possession of a bladed article and possession of cannabis.

    They didn't enter any pleas during their appearance at Sheffield Magistrates' Court, and have been remanded into custody.

    They are due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court next month.

    A man who admitted killing a North Yorkshire mum has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

    The body of Angela Rider, who was 51, was discovered at a house in Cawood, near Selby, last March.

    Adrian Rodi, 50, pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility at Leeds Crown Court in September.

    At the time of Ms Rider's death, her family described her as a "beautiful mum" and "wonderful daughter."

    Rodi was told he will serve his sentence in a secure hospital.

    He will have to serve nine years before he is eligible to apply for parole.

    A stolen 51-year-old Morris Minor narrowly avoided crashing when the driver ran a red light at a busy junction in Bradford.

    The world's only woollen coffins, made by Leeds textile firm AW Hainsworth, are becoming more popular, according to the company's boss.

    Sensors which detect whether a seat is free have been rolled out across trains on the East Coast Main Line.

    The York-based London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has begun using the technology above seats on all its trains to make it easier for passengers to avoid having to stand.

    The system detects which seats are occupied by activating beam sensors between each station the train stops at.

    Passengers can view digital maps showing which seats are free by connecting their mobile phones to the onboard wi-fi.

    A traffic light system has also been installed above seats to display their current and future availability.

    This consists of green when a seat is unreserved for the whole journey, amber when a seat is reserved for part of the journey and red when a seat is reserved for the whole journey.

    LNER took over the operation of trains on the East Coast Main Line from VirginTrains East Coast in June this year, returning the route to public ownership.

    The force estimate 13,000 vehicles are being driven illegally in East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

    Sheffield artist Pete McKee is to be presented with an honorary doctorate later.

    Mr McKee is best known for his murals around the city.

    He also owns a shop and gallery in Sharrow.

    He's being recognised by Sheffield Hallam University for his contribution to the city's cultural history.

    A team of serving wounded and injured military personnel and veterans have marked Remembrance Day at one of the highest points on earth.

    The team, led by the Royal British Legion's Battle Back Centre and Leeds Beckett University, are trekking through the Himalayas.

    They reached the summit of Mera Peak yesterday, raising a Royal British Legion (RBL) flag at 6,500 metres above sea level.

    Since it was established in 2012, the Battle Back Centre, in Newport, Shropshire, said it had supported more than 5,000 wounded, injured and sick service personnel.

  16. Work starts on dry dock for Hull's museum shippublished at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2018

    Work has begun on a new home for Hull's popular museum ship, the Arctic Corsair, as part of plans to make the city a tourist destination for maritime history.

    The old trawler, which has been converted into a tourist attraction, will be moved to a dry dock as part of £27m plans.

    The Environment Agency will empty silt from an old dry dock near Hull College to help make way for the ship, which is currently moored further down the waterway.

    Deputy leader of Hull City Council, Darren Hall, says Arctic Corsair is the only sidewinder trawler which is accessible to the public.

    He says the work - which is also expected to improve flood defences for more than 2,000 properties in the city centre - will allow "far more visitors" to see the ship.

    Sir Cliff Richard will play Europe's largest open air arena in June next year, following a sell-out show at the venue in 2017.

    The announcement comes after Kylie Minogue also announced she'd be playing the venue in August.

    Green protesters brought traffic on Eastgate in Leeds to a temporary halt with an impromptu demonstration during the morning rush-hour.

    Members of the Leeds branch of the Extinction Rebellion group held a banner across the road which runs next to the Victoria Gate shopping centre.

    They also stood in front of a bus coming down Eastgate during the protest to highlight climate change.

    Last month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a warning that the world was failing to keep the rise in global temperatures under 1.5C.

    The future of a pupil referral unit in Harrogate could be "put in doubt" if key funding is cut, a headteacher has warned.

    John Warren, headteacher of The Grove Academy in Harrogate, is calling on county councillors to delay for a year any plans for cuts to the pupil referral units which take in children excluded from mainstream schools.

    A consultation has just come to an end over proposals to halve their budgets.

    Mr Warren says: "Without that money we're put into serious jeopardy of how we can sustain the staff and the building."

    The council says the proposals are "not set in stone" and it will listen to what people have said during the consultation.
