    Staff at Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire have found the furry reason why the vehicle entry barrier system to the wood has been playing up.

    They found this tiny wood mouse snuggled up, fast asleep on the "cosy" circuit board in the barrier's control arm housing.

    Despite the 8,000 acres of woodland for the nocturnal burrower to bed down in, it seems this one preferred to doze to the accompaniment of the fizz and crackle of electricity.

    Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "entrance charge"...

    An 11-year-old girl from Halifax killed herself after getting off a school bus and sending her mother a text message saying: "I love you but so sorry", an inquest has heard.

    Ursula Keogh, 11, from Halifax, got off the bus home near a bridge over a river on 22 January.

    Her body was found three hours later just over a mile downstream, the inquest heard.

    Her mother had felt "fobbed off" as she tried to get support for Ursula, the coroner said. There was evidence she intended to kill herself, he said.

    Coroner Martin Fleming said it was a "desperately sad case" and warned "communication difficulties needed to be ironed out" between youth support services.

    One lane of the M1 in South Yorkshire will be closed shortly for a broken down car to be recovered.

    The car has been moved from the live lanes of traffic and onto the grass verge on the motorway.

    The incident happened northbound between junction 30 and 31.

    Seven men are due to be sentenced later after being convicted of the sexual exploitation of girls in Rotherham between 1998 and 2005.

    Mohammed Imran Ali Akhtar, 37, Asif Ali, 33, Tanweer Ali, 37, Salah Ahmed El-Hakam, 39, Nabeel Kurshid, 35, Iqlak Yousaf, 34, and a seventh man who can't be named for legal reasons, were convicted after a trial.

    Between them they faced 28 charges of rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.

    The convictions are the latest to come out of Operation Stovewood, the National Crime Agency's investigation into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham, which has identified more than 1,500 victims.

    A picture by world famous Bradford artist David Hockney has set a new record for a work by a living artist sold at auction.

    Hockney's Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold for $90m (£70m) at auction at Christie's in New York.

    The work was described as "one of the great masterpieces of the modern era" by the auction house.

    The previous record for the highest price paid for work by a living artist was $58m.

    That went to the 12ft stainless steel sculpture Balloon Dog (Orange) by American Jeff Koons in 2013.

    A Grimsby man cut a teenager's throat in an unprovoked attack and then strolled into a supermarket to eat raspberries, a court in Hull has heard.

    Colin Clarkson, 51, of Heneage Road, whispered "random murder" as he knifed the 19-year-old outside an Asda store in Grimsby in July.

    He then calmly walked into the shop and sat on the floor eating berries while waiting for police to arrive.

    Clarkson admitted attempted murder and possessing an offensive weapon during a hearing at Hull Crown Court and was jailed for 10 years and eight months.

    Crown Prosecution Service lawyer Jeremy Evans said the victim was "very lucky to escape with his life" after the "brutal, random and completely unprovoked attack".

  9. North Yorkshire police boss takes over fire servicepublished at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2018

    A major change to the running of emergency services in North Yorkshire is under way.

    The county's Police and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan, now has responsibility for the fire service.

    The Policing and Crime Act 2017, external gives PCCs the power to take control of fire services in their area.

    Mrs Mulligan says an independent report into the "situation" at North Yorkshire's fire service will be published shortly.

    The change comes after complaints were made about "bullying behaviour" from Mrs Mulligan.

    Yesterday, she faced a police panel for the first time since the allegations were made against her, in the same week that separate further allegations were made about her conduct.

    Her office has declined to comment on the latest allegations.

    A convicted murder has absconded from a prison in West Sussex.

    Jeremy Brabooke, 56, was last seen at HMP Ford, an open prison, on Wednesday.

    He was given a life sentence in 1988 for a murder in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

    He is known to have links to Hayling Island and Portsmouth in Hampshire, Sussex Police said.

    Anyone who sees him, or knows where he is, is asked to call 999.

    They were up 2% in the three months to September, which is the sixth consecutive quarter of rising sales.

    Asda, which has its headquarters in Leeds, has announced big job cuts ahead of the proposed merger with Sainsbury's if the competition watchdog approves the plans.

    Sheffield United say it's "proactive" when dealing with potential troublemakers, after latest government figures showed the club handed out the third highest number of banning orders in the country.

    The 53 banning orders were given out last season, with 62 supporters being arrested at games.

    In a statement, the club said it won't tolerate misbehaviour, with the number of banning orders showing how it is dealing with anti-social behaviour.

    “We have communicated a number of strong messages to highlight the fact that we are working closely with police forces across the UK to identify a minority who spoil matches for the majority of supporters, including state-of-the-art CCTV system," the statement said.

    The Home Office statistics also show there were 3.5 football-related arrests for every 100,000 people attending the matches.
