    A young man with autism has been awarded for his volunteer work in the Peak District.

    Osian Wilson has spent three years working on the Eastern Moors on the fringes of Sheffield and Chesterfield.

    He began as a youth ranger and now works as a conservation trainee - he's even started a campaign to end littering through education in schools.

    The 17-year-old has been named Young Volunteer of the Year at the UK National Parks Volunteer Awards.

    A man has been left with serious injuries after a hit-and-run in Bradford this morning.

    It happened at about 06:45 on Little Horton Lane when the man, who is in his 50s, was hit by a car.

    He was taken to hospital with serious injuries but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

    Police say their enquiries are continuing.

    A man is campaigning for retiring York pantomime dame Berwick Kaler to be made a real one by the Queen.

    Britain's longest serving pantomime dame announced his retirement after 40 years at York Theatre Royal last week.

    He's such a panto legend that dedicated fans queue through the night, external 10 months before Christmas to be the first to get their hands on tickets.

    The 72-year-old recently announced he's retiring after this year's show, titled The Grand Old Dame of York.

    Anthony Day has had his letter calling for the panto dame to become an actual Dame published in national and local newspapers.

  8. MPs to raise concerns over police job lossespublished at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2018

    A cross-party group of MPs will today urge the home secretary to find money to help cover changes to police pensions.

    The MPs are due to meet Sajid Javid later to highlight concerns that jobs could be lost at Humberside Police if the rise in employer contributions comes out of existing police budgets.

    Hull North MP Diana Johnson says: "One of the major drivers of higher crime in Humberside is the fall in police numbers to levels not seen since the 1970s."

    Police and Crime Commissioners for both the Humberside and Lincolnshire forces have also expressed concerns about the impact of the change.

    The Home Office say it's working closely with forces to understand the impact pension changes will have.

  10. Officer to face misconduct hearing for free train travelpublished at 12:33 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2018

    A West Yorkshire Police officer is to face a misconduct hearing after he tried to travel on a train for free, claiming he was undercover when he wasn't.

    PC Damian Groves is due to attend the hearing next week.

    He is accused of breaching the force's Standards of Professional Behaviour.

    It's alleged that in April and May he got on board an East Coast mainline train between Leeds and Peterborough, external.

    When the guard asked him for his ticket he got out his warrant card and claimed he was travelling in order to conduct undercover work.

    However, West Yorkshire Police said he wasn't on duty on the day and did not have permission to use his warrant card to travel.

    A group of West Yorkshire mums have written a book to explain terror attacks to young children.

    The digital book, Oh But Why Mum, was written in the aftermath of last year's Manchester Arena attack which killed 22 people, including six from Yorkshire.

    It's been written by a group called Huddersfield Circle of Sisters.

    The group hope the book will help parents and teachers with difficult conversations.

    Two weeks of extraordinary hand and eye coordination skills begin today in North Yorkshire.

    The UK Snooker Championship begins in York today.

    Defending champion, Ronnie O'Sullivan, will be in the city looking to win a record seventh title at the Barbican Centre.

    The tournament winner will pocket £170,000.

    Burton Constable Hall in East Yorkshire is one of many venues across the UK which will be letting visitors in for free for a week in December.

    The scheme has been organised by the National Lottery, which has funded hundreds of arts and cultural projects.

    Susan Hopkinson, director of Burton Constable Hall, near Hull, says their courtyard area has benefited from lottery money.

    She said: "We've been restoring the buildings, bringing them back into use and giving them a new purpose."

    Children in Yorkshire are to get the chance to see two of this year's biggest Christmas TV specials before anyone else.

    Free screenings of BBC family favourites Zog and The Midnight Gang will be held in Bradford, Sheffield and York.

    As well as a sneak peek of Zog and The Midnight Gang, families will also be able to walk the red carpet and pose for photos with famous props from some of the BBC’s biggest shows.

    "I hope people will apply for free tickets so they can see them before anyone else.”

    The purchase of new fire engines for Sheffield and Doncaster might never happen as South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service braces itself for the impact of more than £4m in savings.

    Members of South Yorkshire Fire Authority, the body made up largely of councillors which controls the service, are getting to grips with the prospect of large bills they could not foresee only a year ago.

    Next year's spending is on course to balance as expected, but in future years it is estimated that savings of more than £4m will be needed.

    However, plans to introduce new fire trucks in Sheffield and Doncaster have now been put on hold, with an acceptance from within the service that they might never happen because of the new cost constraints.

    One of the highlights will be when Yorkshire play Warwickshire at Clifton Park in York in a four-day County Championship match in June.

    It will be the first ever first-class fixture at the ground - and only the second County Championship match played in the city.

    The last was back in 1890 at Wigginton Road.

    A North Yorkshire wildlife artist has been waging a one-man mission to slow the decline in the number of tree sparrows.

    Once among the most common birds of all, tree sparrows are now struggling for survival and appear on the RSPB's "red list" of endangered species.

    But in a garden above the Yorkshire Wolds village of Thixendale, their chirping can still be heard loud and clear.

    A long-term conservation project by wildlife artist Robert E Fuller has seen the number of tree sparrows in his garden go from two in 1998 to 35 breeding pairs now.

    To celebrate this conservation success, the artist has painted a new original picture of 19 tree sparrows all huddled along one branch.
