The 23ft-high tree outside the Town Hall in Northallerton has become a major talking point after criticism from several national newspapers, one of which labelled it a "giant green parking cone".

But Northallerton Business Improvement District (BID), which ordered the tree, is urging critics to judge it in its full glory when it's officially lit up for the first time on 2 December following this test lighting earlier this month:

BID manager Julia Robinson said: "People are rushing to judgement during the installation, but we are convinced many will change their minds when they see the tree glistening with thousands of lights throughout December."

The original plan was to erect a real Christmas tree in front of Northallerton Town Hall, but Bid staff were told that wouldn’t be possible because it would need a tree pit or frame to secure it.

Mrs Robinson said: "We are more than happy with the alternative and have tried to strike a balance with safety barriers that protect the tree from vandalism but don't detract from the spectacle."

The burials are thought to be in keeping with funerary rites adopted during the early centuries of the Germanic migrations to eastern England.

A trial has been taking place in Headingley and Harehills and a report claims that the amount of contaminated recycling waste has been reduced.

This means that things that can't be recycled are put in the green bins and the council then has to re-sort it, costing them extra money.

The paper, set to go before Leeds City Council, states: "This has been successful in delivering higher levels of uncontaminated recycling and there are other areas of the city where this model may be appropriate."
