The Unite union said drivers in the county, together with drivers in Teesside and County Durham are the second-lowest paid in the country, and it is seeking a rise of £1 an hour.

A planned strike on 16 December was postponed, but a revised package has now been rejected and a walk out will start on 6 January.

Arriva said it had made "considerable concessions" in the pay talks.

The union said the revised package, which included 75p on the hourly rate over two years in four instalments, "failed to bridge the pay gap".

Regional officer Bob Bolam said: "Our members can't endure this glaring pay inequality - the ball is now very much in the management's court."

Nigel Featham, head of Arriva buses in the region, said: "Arriva has done everything in its power to avoid this outcome, having made considerable concessions in pay talks.

"Industrial action will achieve nothing but misery for the travelling public."

The 42-year-old is an inmate at Lowdham Grange in Nottinghamshire.

Reece has now been given an extra seven-year prison sentence.

Judge Jeremy Richardson QC, told Reece: "I wish to make it plain that I regard you as an exceptionally dangerous man."

"I cannot envisage a situation where it will ever be safe to release you into the community, given your history and the fact that you continue to be an exceptionally dangerous man."

Leeds Bridge heading into the city has been closed for most of the year because of work to strengthen it.

The Grade II-listed structure carries traffic on Bridge End over the river and was originally finished in 1873.

It was the location of some of the first ever recorded moving film footage showing traffic on the bridge in 1888.

The pioneer film-maker Louis Le Prince captured traffic travelling across the bridge and a blue plaque close by records the feat.

It wasn't due to reopen until next year, but Leeds City Council says: "Good weather made progress quicker than expected".
