    York's high rents and zero-hours contracts are being blamed for more of the city's families having to turn to foodbanks this Christmas.

    The warning's come from the Chill in the Community cafe in the city's Acomb area.

    The cafe works with York foodbank to hand out emergency parcels to people who can't afford to put food on the table.

    Organiser Mary Passeri says: "Extra demand this Christmas has come from people in work, rather than those on benefits."

    It's an example of York's "invisible poverty", she adds.

    The end of tolls on bridges between South West England and south Wales has prompted calls for the Humber Bridge to be given the same treatment.

    People have had to pay to cross the Severn Estuary since Roman times, but from today charges on the M4 and M48 Severn bridges have been axed.

    Now, the Hull and Humber Chamber Of Commerce is calling on the government to scrap tolls on the Humber Bridge - it's estimated that could save regular users up to £1,400 a year.

    Motorists pay £1.50 for a one-way car journey across the Humber Bridge or £1.35 for drivers using an electronic tag.

    The Humber Bridge Board says how the bridge operates is governed by an Act of Parliament, so the question of whether tolls should be scrapped is one for MPs to debate.

    A 1,000mph race car project has been saved after a Yorkshire entrepreneur stepped in to buy the business.

    The Bloodhound supersonic vehicle, external - built with a jet engine bolted to a rocket - is all but finished.

    Its future was in jeopardy amid a failure to secure investment which forced the firm financing it into administration.

    But Barnsley-based entrepreneur Ian Warhurst has bought the project for an "undisclosed amount".

    The Bristol-based team behind it aims to beat the existing land speed world record of 763mph.

    It is due to attempt record-breaking speed in South Africa, where a 18km-long, 1,500m-wide track at Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape has been prepared for it.

    Parts for the project were tested at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Rotherham.

    Plans to build a "super prison" housing 1,000 inmates in village near York which already has a maximum security jail are due to be debated later.

    The plans are for Full Sutton, where the parish council is looking into plans for a £90m, Category C jail.

    The Ministry of Justice says the new jail would create 500 new jobs, but campaigners opposing the plans say the site would leave them feeling "very vulnerable".

    In a statement, the Ministry of Justice said: "We have undergone extensive work to ensure the Full Sutton site is suitable for a new development.

    "We fully understand the concerns of residents, and are committed to mitigating any disruption that may arise from the development of the site."

    Changes to the compensation scheme for passengers on delayed Northern Trains which runs services in Yorkshire have been announced.

    Previously, people could only claim if their train journey had been delayed by 30 minutes or more, but that's being changed to 15 minutes from today.

    More than 11,000 Northern passengers have been paid compensation due to disruption since the summer.

    The online fashion retailer Asos, which has a large warehouse in Barnsley, has joined many of its high street counterparts in issuing a profit warning.

    The company said trading in November was "significantly behind expectations".

    Despite sales growth of 14% from September to November, it had seen "a significant deterioration" in November.

    Shares in the firm fell by more than a third in response.

  7. Cargo ship rescued off Spurn Point after power losspublished at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2018

    A cargo ship lost power and drifted during rough weather off the East Yorkshire coast, sparking a rescue mission.

    The Thea II vessel got into difficulty three nautical miles east of Spurn Point at 15:00 on Saturday after a power outage, the coastguard said.

    The rescue team tried to use a tow line to help move the stricken ship but both Thea II and a tug boat ran aground.

    At 01:30 on Sunday the ship was refloated and moved to deeper waters.

    The Thea II had 11 crew on board. Southeasterly winds of 52 knots (60mph) were recorded on Saturday night in the area.

    A man's been charged with murder after a woman was found dead in a block of flats in Leeds last week.

    Police were called to Saxton Gardens in the Richmond Hill area on Friday morning by the ambulance service where the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Joe Atkinson, 25, of The Avenue, Richmond Hill, is due to appear before Leeds Magistrates' Court later charged with the murder of Poppy Devey-Waterhouse (pictured), 24, of the same address.

    This was the scene in Sheffield city centre a little earlier after a shop was left "trashed" when a car smashed into it.

    The JD Sports shop on The Moor was left with glass smashed and trainers scattered over the floor during the early morning incident.

    Police officers were called at about 03:45 this morning to reports of a car being driven into the shop.

    It's not known what, if anything, was taken and there have been no arrests.

    One person who saw the store this morning said the store "looks trashed".

    A man's died following a crash in North Yorkshire.

    It happened on the A168 near Thirsk at about 18:45 on Friday night within a section of roadworks on the northbound carriageway.

    Police say the man, who was in his 40s and from York, was driving a Vauxhall Insignia and died at the scene.

    His family's have been informed and are being supported by the police.

    Officers are appealing for people to come forward who witnessed the collision or recall seeing the black Vauxhall Insignia prior to the crash.

    People with vehicle dash cams who were travelling in the area on Friday are also being asked to check the footage for possible sightings.

    Swimwear designer Sian Gabbidon, from Leeds, has been chosen as the winner of The Apprentice 2018 by Lord Sugar.

    The 26-year-old beat nut milk entrepreneur Camilla Ainsworth, 22, to win a £250,000 investment from Lord Sugar in her swimwear firm.

    She said she was "absolutely over the Moon" and that the possibilities of their partnership were "endless".

    Lord Sugar said although it was a "crowded market" Gabbidon was "an expert" in her field.

    It is Lord Sugar's first investment in a fashion business in the show's history.

    Gabbidon said on Instagram, external that it had been a "rollercoaster" and she was "overwhelmed" but "very excited".

    An Olympic sprinter from South Yorkshire who won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year has finally been given a replica of the trophy over half a century after the event.

    Dorothy Hyman, 77, from Cudworth, won Commonwealth and Olympic medals during the late 1950s and early 1960s, winning the BBC honour in 1963.

    It was thought that she was one of the only people never to have been given a replica, until she was presented with the famous camera trophy before last night’s BBC award show.

    A campaign by her MP helped secure the award during the Birmingham ceremony, where Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas won the top award.

    Carl Simpson, founder of the Raise the Roof Homeless Project, told the BBC he paid £1,092 for 14 twin rooms at the Royal Hotel in Hull, part of the Britannia Hotels group.

    In a Facebook post, external shared by hundreds, Mr Simpson said he was "gutted".

    An employee at the Royal Hotel told the BBC on Sunday there was no-one available to comment.

    The reason for the cancellation is unclear.

    Mr Simpson said he had been hoping to repeat "the success of last Christmas" when he was able to book 28 people into an Ibis hotel for two nights.

    An early cost estimate MPs had when they were approving the HS2 high-speed rail project was "enormously wrong", a former HS2 boss has told BBC Panorama.

    The HS2 scheme will see the construction of a high-speed line between London and Leeds and Manchester, running through South Yorkshire and into North Yorkshire.

    Doug Thornton said the costing underestimated the value of many properties HS2 needed to purchase along the proposed route and thousands more had not been budgeted for.

    Mr Thornton said the figure MPs saw was hundreds of millions of pounds too low. He was later dismissed.

    HS2 rejects claims MPs were misled.

    It says it followed the correct process to keep Parliament updated on budgetary changes.

    Two young women have died in a crash during hazardous driving conditions in South Yorkshire.

    A white Fiat 500 and a blue Mini Cooper crashed on the A628 Woodhead Pass near Dunford Bridge at about 13:30 on Saturday.

    Two women in the Fiat, aged 20 and 22, were killed in the collision, South Yorkshire Police said.

    A third woman in the car was seriously injured.

    A 15-year-old girl has gone missing from her home in Leeds.

    Nicoleta Pintile was last seen on Sunday morning in the Chapeltown area, according to police.

    She is described as white, slim, 5ft 5ins tall, with dark hair and was last seen wearing a grey dress and grey jacket.

    Anyone with any information about her whereabouts is being asked to contact police.
