    The historic Leeds Bridge will reopen before Christmas to two-way traffic, as maintenance works comes to completion.

    Bridge End over the River Aire into the city centre will be fully accessible to drivers from 21 December.

    Painting of the bridge, to improve appearance and protect the 150-year-old ironwork, will begin in January.

    Originally completed in 1873, the Grade II listed structure is made of wrought and cast iron.

    The bridge is widely known for being featured in some some of the world’s first-ever recorded moving film footage, when Louis Le Prince filmed traffic travelling across it.

    A loud bang is expected to be heard in Barnsley tomorrow ahead of the demolition of a car park next month, the council has warned.

    An air horn will sound before the bang which is part of a trial blast at the multi-storey car park in the town centre.

    It's planned to happen at about 08:00, with the council saying there is no danger to anyone.

  3. East Yorkshire nature reserve gets £20k improvement grantpublished at 11:06 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2018

    Wetland wildlife at an East Yorkshire RSPB site are set to benefit after it was given a grant of more than £20,000 to improve supplies for wildfowl, wading birds and other creatures.

    Staff at RSPB Blacktoft Sands, near Goole, say the money has allowed them to improve food supplies for the animals living on the landscape.

    The money comes from Viridor Credits, which distributes funds from the landfill tax.

    Operators of landfill sites are required to pay landfill tax on anything left on their site as disposed waste, external, with exemptions for certain materials in some circumstances.

    A West Yorkshire police pooch has survived being rammed by a van during a televised chase.

    The canine kerfuffle happened in Wakefield last night.

    Happily, judging by the pic below, dog and handler all seem to be well:

    A Sheffield man has been charged with bribery offences after the National Crime Agency (NCA) investigated claims of cricket spot-fixing.

    Mohammed Ijaz, 33, of Chippingham Road, Sheffield was charged yesterday with two counts of bribery alongside two other men, the NCA says.

    The spot-fixing links to tournaments organised by national cricket boards from Pakistan and Bangladesh, according to the National Crime Agency.

    Mr Ijaz is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court next month.

    The University of York has made it onto a list of 'remarkable' places put together by Historic England.

    The campus, built in the early 1960s, is one of the highlights from the list of 952 buildings and sites given new or upgraded protection by the heritage organisation in 2018.

    Historic England describes York University as "a high-quality post-war university landscape that fulfils the architects' masterplan vision of creating a town in miniature, with a pedestrianised environment."

    The campus was heralded as the beginning of contemporary university planning in Britain.

    Two other buildings in North Yorkshire have also made the list: the Former Otterington Railway Station (pictured right) in Northallerton, built by the London and North Eastern Railway in 1932, and Cappleside Barn (pictured left), in Ribblesdale, which was built in 1714.

    Have you "herd" the "moos"? It seems the "steaks" have been raised at a restaurant in Hull...

    A sign's been put up by the owners of Steak 1884 issuing what might be described as a "bullish" warning to people considering clambering onto a bovine model by the front door.

    Perhaps in an effort to quell fantasies about becoming the star of the rodeo and taming a bucking bronco, the resturant's put up a sign saying: "Please do not sit or climb on the bull".

    It says the management of the restaurant, which is in the Fruit Market area of the city, "do not accept responsibility for injury or upset caused by disregarding this notice".

    Is it possible that people caught ignoring the sign will be asked to "moove" along?

  8. Hundreds expected at South Yorkshire pit ceremonypublished at 09:39 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2018

    A ceremony to remember the men who lost their lives working at a South Yorkshire pit is due to take place later.

    Grimethorpe Colliery, home to the famous brass band which inspired a box office hit, closed 25 years ago.

    One of the deepest pits in Britain, it employed about 6,000 men at the time of its closure in May 1993.

    Hundreds of people are expected to attend the memorial event.

    A man's due in court later charged with the murder of a 73-year-old woman in Bradford.

    Edward Small, 75, of Raymond Drive, has been charged with killing Sheila Small.

    She was found dead at an address in the same street in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

    Mr Small is due before magistrates in Bradford later.

  10. Fan gets on knees to beg Wednesday boss to sack managerpublished at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2018

    A Sheffield Wednesday fan has begged the club's chairman to sack the manager during a fans' forum in which it emerged the club was being put up for sale.

    The fan reportedly got on his knees and begged Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri to get rid of manager Jos Luhukay.

    The Owls are currently 18th in the Championship and have been placed under a transfer embargo.

    The club's picked up just six points from a possible 36.

    During the forum, Mr Chansiri said he was putting the club up for sale with "many people" wanting to buy them.

    The search is continuing for a 17-year-old Chinese girl who's gone missing from Scarborough.

    Mei Chen was last seen on Monday morning and North Yorkshire Police have issued a national appeal for information and possible sightings of Mei.

    She'd been studying at the International School in Scarborough since she arrived in the UK in October.

    North Yorkshire Police said Mei was thought to have boarded a train at York heading towards London on Monday morning.

    British Transport Police and all UK police forces have been alerted, as well as border and immigration officials.

    Anyone with information about Mei's whereabouts should call police on 101.

    Do you recognise this man? Police want to speak to him in connection with a "vicious" attack during which a man was head-butted in Huddersfield railway station.

    A man in his early twenties was approached by the suspect on the main station concourse at about 23:50 on 2 December.

    He was then assaulted in what police describe as an "unprovoked and vicious attack" which left the victim with injuries requiring stitches.

    If you witnessed the incident, British Transport Police are urging you to get in touch.

    Six gang members who carried out substandard or unnecessary roofing work for vulnerable elderly customers in North Yorkshire have been jailed for a total of 18 years.

    They were found guilty at Teesside Crown Court, after being investigated by North Yorkshire County Council trading standards, along with two other men who were sentenced to community orders.

    They had overcharged five men in their 70s, 80s and 90s by thousands of pounds in 2016 and 2017.

    Judge Sean Morris said it was a "well-organised fraud that set out to fleece elderly people of their savings".

    The sentences ranged from 12-month community orders to almost four years in jail.

    Trading standards said an 89-year-old Richmond man had been driven to banks in Darlington on three occasions to transfer a total of £17,000.

    Police found the gang had targeted four other victims living in Thornaby, Pocklington, York and Rowlands Gill, Gateshead.

    Three had paid £18,500, £10,700 and £9,500 but one was stopped from handing over money by neighbours who called the police.

    Sheffield Wednesday is up for sale, the club's owner Dejphon Chansiri has confirmed.

    Mr Chansiri made the announcement at the end of a fans' forum at Hillsborough last night.

    He said: "I will say this official to journalists and all. I will put this club on the market and I believe many people will want to buy."

    Chansiri (pictured left) had fielded questions for several hours, mainly about the future of manager Jos Luhukay.

    The Thai businessman bought Wednesday in 2015 for £37.5m from Milan Mandaric (pictured right) and it's thought he's since spent about £70m on the club.

  18. Hull City asks fans for donations to local foodbankpublished at 06:54 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2018

    Hull City fans are being asked by the club to bring donations for a local food bank to this Saturday's home game.

    The club says the "generosity of fans" helped to stock Hull Foodbank's warehouse last year and it hopes to do the same again.

    It collected donations before the match against Brentford on Saturday with the amount received "exceeding all expectations".

    There will be another collection, at the Dugout Bar, ahead of this weekend's fixture against Swansea.

  20. Leeds teenager due in court over terror chargepublished at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2018

    A teenager from Leeds is due to appear at the Old Bailey later charged with terror offences.

    Michal Szewczuk (pictured), 18, is a student at university in Portsmouth where he was arrested a couple of weeks ago.

    He's facing five counts of encouraging terrorism and three of spreading terrorist publications, linked to a neo-Nazi group.

    The charges relate to accounts on a social media site called Gab.
