  14. Drug and weapon x-ray scanner used at Leeds prisonpublished at 07:51 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2019

An x-ray body scanner has been set up at Leeds Prison in a bid to stop people smuggling in drugs, weapons and phones.

    Leeds prison

It comes as police warn there's evidence members of organised crime gangs are finding work in jails so they can pass things to inmates.

Prisons Minister Rory Stewart says he'll resign if levels of drugs and violence at 10 prisons don't fall by August this year under a £10m programme to improve their security and living conditions.

Yorkshire prisons including Leeds, Hull, Humber, Lindholme, Moorland and Wealstun are among the 10 jails under the spotlight.

Ben Miller, a prison officer at Leeds, says: "When they go through the scan it produces an image like a hospital x-ray, but not as defined.

"Suspect packages are identified by straight edges, which clearly should not be inside the human body."

    Nathan Turvey
    BBC Yorkshire

Thousands of some of the most vulnerable people in Yorkshire could be at risk because of delays in carrying out mental health assessments designed to keep them safe, the BBC has found.

    Man in care home

People with conditions like dementia who live in a care home or hospital can be prevented from leaving for their own safety, if they're thought to be a danger to themselves or others, as part of what's known as a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards assessment.

But research by the BBC has found that across the Yorkshire region about 12,000 assessments were not completed in the last financial year - and many are still waiting to be assessed more than a year after applying.

The government says it acknowledges it is "a broken system" and says it's working to fix it.
