    People over 60 in Bridlington are being invited to take part in a ground-breaking study to tackle the most common cause of sight loss in the UK.

    The research, into age-related macular degeneration, is being led by scientists from the University of Nottingham.

    They hope their results could lead to more personalised treatments being developed for the condition.

    A large screen showing pictures of Libby Squire will be driven around the streets of Hull this evening.

    The 11 square metre screen, displaying images of the missing 21-year-old, is expected to be stationed at the junction of Beverley Road during rush hour.

    It will then do a loop of Newland Road, Beverley Road, Cottingham Road and Queens Road before heading towards the University of Hull.

    Tonight it will be parked up opposite the Welly club, where the University of Hull student went for a night out last Thursday.

    She went missing after getting a taxi home from the club and yesterday a 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case.

    Officers from Humberside Police will also will be out speaking with people and handing out leaflets to gather more information.

    York's Stone Roses bar has had its license renewed after a petition calling for it to be saved was signed by more than 10,000 people.

    North Yorkshire Police opposed the renewal saying officers had been called to the bar, in King Street, 51 times last year.

    The bar said it might have to close down for good, but the council's licencing committee decided to grant a renewal, with some extra conditions.

    Police are looking into the possibility a missing woman from Rotherham may have asked for a lift from a pub on the night she went missing.

    Officers want to confirm if Alena Grlakova went into the Fitzwilliam Arms pub on Taylors Lane on 26 December.

    Police say she was in the area at about 20:00.

    Supt Iain Chorlton said: "The information we have suggests she may have also asked for a lift from the pub and while we work to confirm this, I’d ask anyone who was in the pub that evening and who saw Alena to get in touch with us."

    A report has found East Riding Council could have done more to protect a toddler from suffering life-long injuries at the hands of his mother's violent partner.

    The little boy's father called on the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman to investigate the case.

    It found the council had missed opportunities to protect him.

    Assistant ombudsman Sharon Chappel said: "This sad case highlights the need for councils to follow the basic principles of child protection when dealing with welfare concerns."

    The mother had claimed she would end her relationship with her partner and her children would go to stay with their paternal grandmother for a time, but social workers did not check if this had happened.

    She was subsequently convicted of failing to protect the boy from harm.

    He partner was convicted of causing the boy serious injuries by shaking and is serving a lengthy prison sentence.

    The local authority says it accepts in full the investigation's conclusions relating to the incident five years ago and that an apology has been given to the family.

    One tawny owl was spitting feathers after it got stuck in a telegraph pole in Honley.

    BT engineers received a call from residents who heard screeching from a telegraph pole on 5 February.

    To the engineer's surprise, it was a tawny owl who had got wedged in overnight.

    The owl was taken to Meltham Wildlife Rescue where he is recovering.

    Kathy Heaney, from the rescue charity, said: "He ate three chicks himself today and he will more than likely be released tomorrow.

    "This time of year is for mating and nesting, so it's vitally important for owls to be returned to the site they came from."

    The landfill used to dispose of York's rubbish is closing after more than 30 years, with the site set to be turned into a wildflower meadow.

    The city's refuse will instead go to Allerton Waste Recovery Park, near Knaresborough, where it will be incinerated and used to generate energy.

    Councillor Andrew Waller, who has responsibility for environmental issues at City of York Council, said the Rufforth site would become a "natural park".

    Police have been bagging evidence and taking photographs around this abandoned building in Hull as the search goes on for missing university student Libby Squire.

    A forensic officer has been seen working around the building, next to Oak Road playing fields, in the past half hour.

    The 21-year-old University of Hull student went missing after a night out last Thursday and police yesterday arrested a 24-year-old man in connection to her disappearance.

    A Sheffield charity is appealing for help finding homes for small pets after an influx in hamsters, gerbils and degus.

    Blue Cross normally helps find homes for cats and dogs, but it's appealing for people to come forward to help find homes for their smaller pets.

    It says there are six degus, seven mice, two gerbils and a hamster all needing new homes.

    The family of a 16-year-old girl who has returned home after being missing for 50 days say they are “delighted”.

    Pamela Horvathova was last seen on 19 December at an event at iceSheffield.

    She was found in the Darnall area of Sheffield yesterday after a huge police hunt, which included a search of surrounding canals and rivers.

    Supt Paul McCurry said the family were told of her reappearance at about 14:30 yesterday.

    South Yorkshire Police added in a statement that Pamela was found “as a direct result of the public getting behind the inquiry”.

    Police officers are appealing for help in finding a boy after a vulnerable man was punched in the face in Sheffield.

    It's thought a group followed the man and his mother as they left Asda on Chaucer Road at about 21:30 on Thursday 10 January.

    People in the group are said to have abused the man before a boy, who is thought to be about 15-years-old, then punched the man in the face on Buchanan Road.

    He suffered serious injuries.

    Five men have been arrested following a crackdown into county lines drug dealing in Harrogate.

    Police executed raids at two properties, on Bramham Drive and Lincoln Grove on 6 February.

    • A 42-year-old man, from Harrogate, was arrested on suspicion of supplying of class A drugs, possession of cannabis and possessing an electric shock weapon
    • Three men, aged 22, 18 and 16, from Birmingham, were arrested on suspicion of supplying of class A drugs
    • A 53-year-old Harrogate man was arrested on suspicion of supplying of class A drugs.

    Police seized a bag of suspected heroin, mobiles and sim cards, a knife, a baton and an electric shock weapon from the properties.

    County lines refers to criminals from major cities expanding into more rural parts of the country often using young people and vulnerable adults to act as drug runners.

    The two Harrogate men have been released under investigation, while the three from Birmingham remain in police custody.

    I'm at Hull’s Oak Road playing fields where police officers searching for Libby Squire have begun lifting manhole covers.

    Yesterday, a 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case and this afternoon there's a growing police presence at the playing fields.

    A crime scene investigation team has just arrived at the scene as the search for the 21-year-old, missing since last Thursday, continues.

    A man has been held under the Mental Health Act amid fears dangerous materials were stored in a flat.

    Firefighters and police officers executed a warrant at an address in Ryedale Walk in Doncaster after being contacted by Thames Valley Police.

    South Yorkshire Police said it believed there were "quantities of material, which could be dangerous if not stored properly" inside the flat.

    A 34-year-old man has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

    Supt Dan Thorpe said officers were continuing to search the property.

    He added: "I would like to reassure local residents that there is no risk to them and the man who was detained as part of the warrant will now receive the appropriate support he needs."
