Although the region's politicians have cash they can use to subsidise services, that amount of money is being reduced by central government.

As a result, putting on early morning services before 07:00 are receiving more investment than other areas.

Neale Wallace, from West Yorkshire Combined Authority, said: "The other priority is for early morning buses, which are generally about getting people to work and keeping them commercially active."

Mr Wallace added that the lowest priority was for evening services because residents are "generally about leisure time and socialising, rather than a need to travel".

A report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation last year said school and college leavers in Wakefield were being "held back" in the jobs market because of poor public transport.

The alert comes following a spate of break-ins across the county, with burglars specifically targeting properties where cars such as BMWs, Audis and Mercedes are on the driveway.

The most recent incident took place at about 01:00 on Tuesday morning in Sutton-in-Craven in which three masked men gained entry to a property and threatened the homeowner and demanded the keys to his Volkswagen 4×4.

The homeowner was able to call the police and the men made off empty-handed, but the victim and his family were left "shaken" by the incident, police say.

Det Ch Insp Dave Ellis said: "If you own a high-performance car, please ensure you take all steps necessary to keep your vehicle locked and secure when at home.

"Burglars will look for easy targets and will check firstly for insecure properties and vehicles, so it's advisable before you go to bed each evening to check that your car is safe, the keys are secure and all your doors and windows are closed and secure."
