  1. Sheffield music star: 'Boys bottle mental health up'published at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2019

A Sheffield music star has opened up about his fight with mental health issues in a new BBC podcast series.

    Adam Oxley and Jon McClure

Jon McClure, frontman from band Reverend and the Makers, was taking part in The Naked Podcast, where guests strip off and have brutally honest conversations.

In a series first involving men, Jon and BBC radio presenter Adam Oxley revealed all, talking about mental health, anorexia and growing up in the North.

"I suffered with mental health issues. A lot of that comes from self confidence and how you feel about yourself generally", Jon said in the podcast.

"Boys bottle it up. It's not the done thing to talk, especially among working class men, northern men particularly.

"I wanted to bust through all that and say sometimes I feel weird about my body and it's all right if you do too."

Series two of The Naked Podcast is available on your phone's podcast store or on the BBC Sounds app now.

  2. Appeal launched after a shortage of playing fields stops Middlesbrough housing developmentpublished at 11:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2019

An appeal has been launched by developers after a shortage of playing fields put a stop to a housing development in Middlesbrough being approved.

Plans to build more than 100 homes at Acklam Iron and Steelworks social club on Park Road South, Grove Hill, were refused last year because it would mean paving over playing fields.

Developers Peter Hall and Leon White had applied to demolish the club and move it, in order to build 96 houses and 28 flats on the parcel of land.

But in June, Middlesbrough Council's planning committee followed officers' recommendation to refuse the plans after Sport England said that the loss of playing fields would be unacceptable.

Now, Mr Hall and Mr White have submitted a formal appealed with the UK Planning Inspectorate.

An inspector will now be appointed by the Secretary of State to review the appeal. If Mr Hall and Mr White are successful in overturning Middlesbrough Council's decision to refuse their original application, the local authority could also be left picking up the bill for the developers' legal costs.

A decision date for Mr Hall and Mr White's appeal has not yet been decided

The common buzzard was discovered between Millington and Huggate and toxicology tests found it had eaten food containing the highly toxic pesticide Aldicarb.

Humberside Police say the substance, which has been banned for more than 10 years, is sometimes added to a bait like a dead rabbit to kill scavengers such as crows and foxes.

Birds which eat carrion, such as red kites and buzzards, often become poisoned and there is also a risk to dogs and other wildlife, police say.

The buzzard, which was found in October last year, also had three shotgun pellets in its body, although this was an old injury, and more recent wounds to its head, possibly from having been confined in a cage trap.

Police say the circumstances of its death are unclear and have issued a renewed appeal for information about people "using these chemicals or involved in the persecution of birds".
