    Police using drones to check for crowd trouble at a key football match in South Yorkshire last night made six arrests.

    The airborne technology was used for the first time as Sheffield United took on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

    The opening stages were overshadowed by Sheffield United's Jack O'Connell having objects, including coins, thrown at him from the crowd while taking a throw-in.

    There's also been reaction on social media to incidents between fans after the match, with some complaining of being trapped trying to get out of the ground and having bricks and bottles thrown at them.

    Afterwards the match commander thanked fans for their behaviour.

    The game finished goalless.

    A Yorkshire cancer charity has provided nearly £3.5m in funding for research programmes in Leeds.

    Yorkshire Cancer Research says the money will help to improve diagnosis times, treatments and quality of life for those with the disease.

    The money will be used to fund healthcare professionals and academics across the area.

    Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole in North Yorkshire is looking for a volunteer, resident witch, to occupy its ivy-clad hovel.

    The successful candidate will be able to carve pumpkins and work with children - without putting them in a cauldron.

    They'll also be expected to provide a memorable, educational service to visitors, by telling stories about North Yorkshire's witches of old.

    The museum say full broomstick training will be provided, along with a hat, cape, hovel and broom.

    An ability to manically cackle will also be considered a distinct advantage.

    Museum director Jennifer Smith said: “We are having a bit of fun with this volunteer role, but in all seriousness, it is about how we provide ways for our visitors to understand our past.”

    Lack of leadership and poor decision making led to overcrowding outside Hillsborough on the day of the tragedy, a policing expert has told a court.

    Douglas Hopkins, an ex-Metropolitan Police match commander, said Hillsborough match commander David Duckenfield left the police control room too late.

    He added he made a "fatal mistake" in letting fans in the ground via an exit gate without telling officers inside.

    Mr Duckenfield denies manslaughter.

    A 16-year-old girl has gone missing from her West Yorkshire home, police say.

    Neelam Rehman has been missing from the Thornhill Lees area of Dewsbury for almost a week.

    She was last seen at about 08:15 on Tuesday 26 February.

    Officers say she has links to Derby and the West Midlands and it's possible she may have travelled to these areas.

    She is described as Asian and has long, black hair.

    Det Sgt Oliver Coates, of Kirklees District CID, said: “We're concerned for Neelam’s welfare and want anyone with information about whereabouts, to contact us."

    The mother of Leeds United fan Toby Nye has admitted defrauding the fund set up to pay for his cancer treatment.

    Toby - who had high-risk neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer - died in January just days after his sixth birthday.

    His mother, Stacey Worsley, pleaded guilty to fraud when she appeared at Leeds Crown Court yesterday.

    The Yorkshire Evening Post, external reported she stole £100,000 and "abused her position" as a trustee of the fund.

    Worsley, who admitted one charge of committing fraud by false representation, is due to be sentenced on 29 March.

    West Yorkshire Police said the fraud did not affect Toby's medical treatment.

    The force said it had secured the return of "all of the money", which will now go to a local good cause yet to be decided on.

    Two people are in hospital with serious injuries after being involved in a "serious" crash with a car in Sheffield on Friday night.

    Emergency services were called to Attercliffe Common at about 22:50 on Friday after reports a blue Audi had crashed with two pedestrians.

    A 46-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man were injured in the crash near the Premier Inn and Ibis hotels.

    They remain in hospital with serious injuries.

    The driver of the Audi was not injured and has been voluntarily interviewed under caution in connection with the incident, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    A new street in West Yorkshire is to be named in honour of a legendary Yorkshire cricketer.

    The street in Baildon will be named Brian Close Walk, in honour of the former Yorkshire and England captain who died in September 2015, aged 84.

    Close, who captained Yorkshire to four County Championship titles, was at the time, the youngest man to make his test debut for England when he was aged just 18.

    He scored almost 35,000 runs as a batsman and made 52 centuries. He also took 1,168 wickets as a bowler and 800 catches as a fielder.

    The proposal to name the new street on a new housing development after the cricketer was put forward by Baildon Town Council.

    The street sign will be unveiled by his widow, Mrs Vivien Close, on Friday.

    The boss of a North Yorkshire college says she plans to give up the role to cycle around the world on a tandem.

    Catherine Dixon is currently chief executive of Askham Bryan College, near York.

    She and peddling pal Rachel Marsden will attempt to become the fastest women in history to circumnavigate the globe on a tandem bike.

    As summer begins this year, the pair are expected to attempt to cycle up to 100 miles a day, covering 18,000 miles across five continents - all within 320 days.

    Their challenge has been registered with the Guinness Book of Records and the pair will be raising funds for Oxfam and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

    The Owls boss says he's looking forward to the game against city rivals later.

    "The whole of the country will be watching", Owls boss Steve Bruce said. "Let's make it a spectacle and, yes, there's always going to be huge rivalry. Let the best team win."

    A win for Sheffield United would see them move into the automatic promotion places in the Championship.

    The reverse fixture at Bramall Lane finished 0-0.

    "Hand on heart they want to stop us going up", Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said." We're not going to be chucking shirts into the crowd if we draw. We're going for the win. We're not scared of losing."
